Re: 9 BOLT POSI REAR 3:70 RATIO REAR DISC
this rear apparently came on f-bodys from 87-90. they were mostly used in australian Holdens. it has a 4 pinion carrier and the axles and bolted in not c-clipped. depending on who you talk to these rears are moderatly to significantly stronger than 10-bolts . i've never seen one with anything except a 3.70 ratio. i bought it about a year ago to slap in my 84z, but my brother wrecked it. so i dont need anymore. I've looked on ebay and craigslist and just the axles go for 150.00 bucks a pop. Parts for these are almost impossible to find . so i was "casting my line" so to speak to see if anybody wanted one in perfect shape, or to use for parts for one they have.
Who knows?

I am interested. Could you PM me a phone number so I could give you a call?
Re: 9 BOLT POSI REAR 3:70 RATIO REAR DISC
How many miles on it? Posi? Is it complete with the brake cables, discs and calipers? I am looking for a rear for a TTA project I am working on.I have never heard of one with those gears in it. Usually they are 3.27 or 2.77 gear ratios. Is the housing in good shape. Is there any heavy pitting or major rust? I am in Waterbury and will be going to Mass on Sat to pick up some GTA rims for my GN. I would like to take a look at it.Thanks,AJ 203-509-2540

not sure how many miles. after i bought it , i opened it up and replaced the seals. evrything looked perfect, no chipping or scoring. even the fluid was clean. no major rot anywhere looks like the guy i bought it from sandblasted it and painted it ,but can,t be sure. just the axle. dont have any brake parts for it. . as for sat. i will be hauling most of my stuff to the stafford swap meet . i just figured i've give everybody on the boards a crack CHEVY 9 BOLT POSI REAR DISC camaro firebird gta irocat it first

Re: 9 BOLT POSI REAR 3:70 RATIO REAR DISC
One last question...are the brakes and backing plates included? If so, are the calipers iron or aluminum? That would help some of us determine at least what years the rear is/is not

Re: 9 BOLT POSI REAR 3:70 RATIO REAR DISC
I'm not looking for one of these, but I can provide some info about them.
3.70 gears were only available in the 9-bolt from the factory in 1985 and 1986. However, 3.70 gears for 9-bolts are available on the aftermarket, so it's possible the rear is from a later model, and someone swapped-in the 3.70. But if the one for sale is an original(and it probably is), then its backing plates(if they're there) would be for the iron calipers.
But updating the backing plates for newer brakes isn't a big deal. You can buy new backing plates for PBRs from ebmiller on this board. I have a set from Ed for this exact swap, and they're nice.
So if the axle is good(and it sounds like it might be), then this would probably be a good purchase, providing the price is right... whatever that means.

Great info!! The seller is going to get some pictures of the backing plates today just so I can make sure whats for sale, and I can plan what I have to do to keep my PBR backing plates.
What did you pay for yours from Ed?

Re: 9 BOLT POSI REAR 3:70 RATIO REAR DISC
He forgot about me, too, so I guess that's just... Ed, lol. But he got back to me eventually. He was a good guy to do business with... good sense of humor, too, lol.
But regarding pricing... for companies like Hawk's, Modern Day Muscle, or others who publish their products and prices, I'd just tell you or provide you with a link. But because Ed is a more private businessman, and I'm not sure he's ever "published" any pricing, I don't feel it's my place to mention his prices.
BTW, I checked-out your vids of the GMMG to see if you zoomed-in close enough to the rearend of your car to show the exhaust, but you didn't. Nice sound, and great job on everything you've done to your car.
I was hoping to be able to see what brakes you have now. Because by your earlier post, it sounds like you already have PBRs on your current 3.45 9-bolt. And being an '89, if that rearend is original, then it should have them. So unless you just want to leave the PBR's backing plates on that rearend for some reason(maybe to sell it), you'd already have the backing plates and everything else you'd need to swap onto the 3.70 rear.
But not meaning to hi-jack this thread, getting back on topic, did you get the pix of this rearend yet?

Re: 9 BOLT POSI REAR 3:70 RATIO REAR DISC
No pics yet. I'm trying to see what backing plates are on this rear. In 2 weeks I'm going from VA to NY. I have my original 3.45 rear sold to a guy in NY, and have plans to meet the seller in NY to get the 3.70 rear. I'm just trying to figure out if I need to swap backing plates, find an extra set of iron brakes etc. Because I don't want to give up my PBR brakes.
It just seems that my plans would work out too good being able to sell/buy a new rear all in the same road trip lol. I can't do much until I see the pictures of the backing plates on the rear for sale so I can figure out my next move.
