I've got a mechanical one sitting around. You're talking about the gear in the tail shaft, right?

I've got a tail shaft from both versions. Mechanical from an 85, electric from an 87. Going 5.3/4l60 so I don't need em

Both shafts are complete, each one has a sensor. 87 trans is complete, sensor and all. Mechanical one is just the shaft with speed sensor, electric is an entire complete tranny.
Sorry for the confusion lol

Re: Electric speed sensor needed

there are two different versions of the speed sensor. 53mm and 22mm. you need to determine which one you need for your application. a 53mm can be picked up at parts stores or ebay for around 25 bucks. the 22mm are no longer made and very hard to find. ive seen them go for over 100.

What would I measure to figure that out? The length of the sensor or the outside diameter of the speed sensor

Re: Electric speed sensor needed

This is the type of electric speedo sensor you need for an 87 Firebird auto:

There are more than 1 version of THIS sensor. They are made to fit a specific range of speedo DRIVEN gears. What is your gear ratio ??

I have a 2.77 rear end.

I talked to transmissioncenter.net on the phone a couple days ago and got one ordered

Re: Electric speed sensor needed

Cool - good to hear you got it figured out. FYI: remember that the electric speedo gears and mechanical speedo gears are NOT compatible.

IIRC you'll need a Brown 39 tooth Driven gear for electric VSS with 2.73/2.77. ( double check that tooth count !! ) BE SURE the sending unit will accept the correct DRIVEN GEAR before you buy it !

Example: This vss will NOT work for 39 tooth gear !

Thanks for the help man, they suggested a 17/37 drive driven for my car, I got the drive gear off eBay a week ago and they included the driven gear with the speedo so it should fit. I remember choosing the right speedo for the right gear range so I should be good on that
