might be worth seeing what reconditioned engine are going for IF you can get a warranty of some sort with one.

Check with your local GM Dealer, GM Parts Direct, a Brand New 350 TBI Caprice engine, is about $1,800 with a 3 year 50,000 mile warranty. I know this is more than you want to pay, but you could get a Credit card application with zero percent intrest for a few months and use that to swing getting the car fixed. Would be worth the piece of mind in the long run.
Or ask around someone may have a still running 305 they will give you a killer deal on for like $100 or so. Running 305's go for about $200 at a local junkyard and they will install for $350 to $500 depending.
Good Luck

junk yard motors are ok, just be sure to hear it run first, the yard I have goten engines from let you go to the yard, pick which one you want, then they pull it out of the car for you, but let you hear it run first. this may not always be possible of course.
At the very least, they will proly give you a 30 day warranty or something like that, they usually do for engines and trannys.

actually i found a place ..today that sold engines for 99 bucks
35 dollars to pull...
thats 134.................bucks...
but they drain all of the oil and fluids...........before entering the yard....
and most of them are stripped..........
ill look into it...
i'm just trying to get things straight..BEFORE this engine goes.....
and i've never done a transplant.. but ..friends say its easy...

Pick up a local trader mags. I don't know about Buffalo, but around here there are lots of motors in their and quite a few of them have not been pulled yet and you can hear them run.
Give it a try..your best bet is to do that.
I know your short on money, but I would go ahead and replace all the gaskets and the timing chain. It is a lot easier to do that stuff while it is out of the car anyway and then you don't have to worry about it for a long time to come.

Look for a 350 with the last three #'s on the serial # being "010" when i was an apprentice mechanic a while ago, my boss told me these where alot tougher.......thicker walls, 4-bolt mains, supposed to be the best for a hi. perf. build up
