10 sec third gen - Worth the trouble?

Hi im looking to throw together something new for street/strip duty, Ive previously only done up mustangs but am curious as to the possibilitys for a 3'rd gen as ive seen many of them around my area fairly clean fairly cheap compared to the notchbacks around.

What possibilitys exist for theese cars? Is it possible to cram a bigblock in without major modifications (Ie pushing the firewall back, messing with the strut towers, or anything to that extent)

Trans's? Can the 700r4's in theese things be made to hold up without hurting the pocket too much? Or would a th400 be required?

Would also appreciate any info on doing the rears in theese, I know the stock rear wont hold up at all but anyone with websites or such describing putting a 9 inch or 12 bolt, Installing wheel tubs ect would be great to see.

Basicly any advice is welcome, I havent been able to find too much info on the web as far as building theese as drag cars and im curious if its worth the trouble of even attempting it or if i should just go find another notch, Thanks in advance and sorry if ive posted this in the wrong section of the message boards didnt see a place that seemed more appropriate

Welcome to thirdgen.org

First of all start looking through the archive. There are lots of topics on dropping a big block into a third gen plus doing driveline modifications. The archive is full of information on just about everything you want to know.

To get it to run in the 10's though don't expect any factory driveline parts to survive.

Yes a bigblock swap is pretty easy.

You can buy a 700R4 to stand up to running 10's for less then $2000

If you are going to run that fast then you will want to swap rears because a 10 bolt can be built to stand up to that but it will cost as much if not more then a brand new aftermarket axle.

I'd have to say that it probably isn't IF you can find a Nova, mustang, camaro, maverick, etc. for a similar price and condition. They put these cars together with so much glue that it's hard to get the weight off of them. However, these cars are plentiful for good 'n cheap. I'd personally go with a TH400 and a BBC if it's not going to see the street, or a 4L80E which is an electronic TH400 if you're going to see street use. Heavy suspension parts and frame stiffeners are easy enough to find.

The bbc will not be a problem. You can even buy headers for the big block for jegs or summit to fit the thirdgen. you will proably want to go with a 12 bolt or a 9-bolt for the rear. And yes the 700r4 trans can be built, but just a rebuild for street will cost 1200 to 1500 bucks. They are still good trans. just my .02 cents.

Welcome to the board.
