Best way to pull a engine and tranny
ok i want to pull my engien and tranny, can i do it at the same time, im thinking just take out the rad, front clip, and pull it right out, will that work
I dont know anything about pullin motors or anything, but i am trying to learn....
you guys make it sound some simple, like u can just unbolt the radiator and the hood like its not prob... i understand the hood is easy, but thats the only thing i can imagine thats easy.
where do u all find out about taking out an engine? Or do most of you just get the car up on jack stands and just start unbolting stuff here and there and just rip it all out?

if ya **** up, tough, cuz you gotta learn
only person who works on my car is ME!
i learned, and boy, am i glad i did
I feel the same way.... My 92z is my first car (i am 19) and i want to work on it myself and have something to show of what i have done. I am planning on building a miniramed 383 which i want to put a D1SC procharger on, but i need to learn how to, mainly, build an engine... its easy to go to a shop and have em build it and put it in, but if anythign were to go wrong, i'd like to know what the deal is instead of going to the shop and saying "my car wont start" and have em rape me on all kinds of things to pay for.
Taking the engine out is basically straight foward and i dont see how anythign could go wrong cause i wont be using the engine and i will prob part out the 305 maybe late summer 2003... but who knows.
Does anyone recommend any good books from a book store or something on building motors? tools is prob the biggest problem, i have just about none, and i feel like i need to get like a grand worth of tools, is that so?

I pulled mine together using a tilt sling. Hood off, radiator out as mentioned above. Exhaust manifolds on, y-pipe disconnected, accessories on.
It's typically a case of disconnecting everything that goes away from the engine (harnesses, hoses, mount bolts, cables, etc.). I label everything with masking tape and waterproof ink pen as I disassemble (including bolts, in some cases).

As stated above remove radiator and hood .I would also take a picture as well as labeling everything and remove power steering unit and strap it aside and remove distributor if you have not done it before as it can get damaged by fire wall and chain.
this is how I told my 17 year old to do it at 16 and he has done 4 r&r no problem.

If you have AC, use tie wire to hang the compressor on the firewall. Since this is your first time pulling an engine, make sure you label everything, and like said above, take pictures. Get a box full of ziplock bags and a marker, that way you won't lose any parts. There have been lots of times where I wished I had bagged stuff but didn't and lost it, and wasted half a day finding the part at the parts or hardware store. If all else fails, post here and we'll help you out.

Too bad that's your role model. It's not the ideal way by any means.

A freind and i pulled my 305 tpi a few weeks ago. Just like they said, take pictures, label everything, and store stuff in labeled bags. Take off the hood and radiator and that should be enough clearance! You might crack your dist. cap, i did. I heard of others doing the same. That was the only damage that i had to the car or motor. Oh yeah, put blankets or fender covers on the front of your car b/c the lift will try to pull towards the car! I got a little scrape, nothing that some buffing can't take out. We pulled the engine and trans at the same time too! good luck
