1987 Camaro Help Me V6-V8
1987 Camaro Help Me V6-V8
I recently bought a 1987 Camaro with T tops and the whole works last summer. The thing that sucks about it is that it has a 6 cylinder. 2.8.. My dad recently redid his 68 Camaro which had a carberated 305 in it. He gave me the 305 which has no problems. How much would it run me to get the engine put in? What else do i need? a new tranny? The one that is in it now is an automatic. Just wondering. I wanted to get it done this winter.
Thanks

you'll need a new tranny as the v-6 won't bolt to the v-8. This type of swap (which will be identical to a v-6 to 350 swap) has been covered a number times, so maybe do a search for that for the specifics. Unless you can find somebody to do the swap for cheap, it may be cost prohibative.

You will need a donor car or you will end up spending a fortune getting all the misc. stuff you will need.
Yes, the trans will have to be changed (different bolt pattern).

What if i have a tranny, which i think i do, with a shifter and all that good stuff. What do you think it would cost me to get it all dropped it? $3000 is what i have saved up. So an engine and tranny is what i have? Anyone give me an estimate of more or less?
We did the v6 to v8 swap last winter. (2.8 to 305) It only cost us about $450 to do it, but we did all the work ourselves. Biggest two items we had to buy were the fuel pressure regulator and a torque arm bracket. We went with a th350 tranny and had to get a different driveshaft (82-83 Camaro w/200 tranny). The hardest part was changing the motor mounts. If you are doing the work yourself that $3000 is going to go a long way for you.

If you aren't doing the work yourself, it makes a lot more sense to sell this car and the V8 you now have, and put the proceeds and your $3000 towards a factory V8 car. It barely makes economic sense to do it yourself, unless the car has some sort of sentimental value (had I known then what I know now, I never would have bought my Camaro).
Are you sure the engine that came out of the '68 Camaro was a 305? The factory put 307's in them, although it is possible someone put a 305 in it sometime later.
