Ok to lift old motor out by TPI?

The used and abused 350TPI is coming out soon and I was wondering if I could lift it out by using a nylon strap wrapped under the plenum? I do want to try to sell the TPI so I don't want to damage it. Will is handle the load? Any better way?

What do you have against using a chain?
I would not even consider lifting by the plenum with a strap but it could work if you really want to do it that way, but why?
If you have stock runners they are kinda of thin and there is a chance that they will tear apart but I would think they could handle the job with a little distortion but take off all the front accessories to lighten up the engine as much as possible and take it slow, and be prepared for the runners to tear apart and drop the motor.

Yes, that'll work fine! We switched over to using seat belt straps a long time ago when working around aluminum engine parts. Got tired of the dents and scratches left by chains!

Take a look at: http://www.speartech.com/coproj-1991ls1.html

The first few pictures show the straps on the TPI unit as we pull the engine and trans from our 91 Z28 project car. We have picked up many engine/trans combinations this way and have never had a problem (or a scratch!!).

Good luck.

I read your article a little while back and I didn't think much of it. Hell, I my put the TPI back on just to but the new motor back in, seems like it will work perfect.

Worked perfect. My nylon strap idea didn't work though, it was way to big.

Nope, it didn't dent or smash anything. There are some surface scratches from it though but its going in the same way.

its not any different than people using carb plates lifting engines out. i didnt think the carb plate was a good idea untill i read in car craft in the tech section about how much the four bolts can hold, its like 14,000+lbs or something crazy like that.

Hey John, how did you get the car to weigh close to 3100lbs? Just curious to see some methods you used to reduce weight! Nice car, pretty, um, "trick"! Thanks-Bryan

Bryan,

The car was weighed with the following changes:

No front swaybar
No back seat
No spare or jack
No floormats
No A/C compressor
Weld Draglites (skinnies on front)
Aluminum driveshaft
1/4 tank of gas

Last but not least: Aluminum engine!:lala:
