EAGLE vs SCAT
I'm looking into a Crank and Rods for a SBC 400 that will produce about 450-500hp. This will be a street rod with maybe 2 trip to the track for tunining purposes only... I have heard so much about different rotating assemblies that im stuck between a Scat and Eagle. Which one is better of the the two/ or is they both of about equal. I will be using 6.0 Rods and Wiseco Flat Top Forge Pistons.
Thanks for your help

My new engine has an Eagle 4340 crank, Scat 4340 I-beam rods with cap bolts and JE floating pistons. I paid extra for the JE instead of SRP pistons because they were much lighter.
The better of the 2 is whatever is the lightest. There are some cranks out there that look like a good deal until you have everything balanced. Pay $1200 for a crank and another $1200 to have it balanced.
Buy quality stuff and pay the extra cost. It's better in the long run. If you can afford it, Lunati parts are the best.

I only bought new pistons, rods and a crank.
Cam - reusing
Intake - reusing
Carb - Used for parts to make a hybrid Holley/Demon alcohol carb
Heads - Once they're fixed, reusing.
The only old parts I currently have that can still be reused is a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy cam. The biggest one available. I also have a stock cast crank. It will probably go into another engine if I can find a cheap one with a spun bearing.

Basic list:
1974 454 block. Bored .060" line honed, decked, ARP studs hold the bottom end in.
Eagle 4340 crank. Standard 454 stroke.
Scat 4340 rods +.250"
JE 13:1 pistons
Merlin oval port heads. Modified for extra lift (springs, valve guides, valve seals), ported and polished.
Comp Cams 11-613-5 solid cam
Comp pro Magnum 1.7 rockers
Edelbrock Victor Jr intake
Holley 850 alcohol carb
That's about the basics. There are a lot more but you should look at my web site for all the specifics about the car. If there's something you need to know that's not listed on the web site, then just ask. If I can answer it, I will.
I'm guessing the new engine should be making around 650 hp in the spring. I should be able to run mid 10's at altitude but will depend on how well the 9" slicks hook up.

If its better for me to start a new thread lemme know..anyways..
I can get the open chamber rectangular heads(stock) just a $150 more than the 781's..Would it be too hard to make this head coupled with a hydraulic cam and 750 CFM carb streetable (w/ AC
) and still produce 500HP@6000-6500?..I can live with driving with 250HP for a year if I know I can get to this goal..And maybe even more (600-650HP range) with the same heads but radical compression, cam, carburation after thatDaz

ahhhhh
i guess i'm one of the people that can have a solid opinion of scat stuff from by awful experiance.........
i built a 383 using their 9000 series crank and 4340 i beam rods.... even with a small base circle cam they still had to be grinded a little....
would i use the same setup for a non stroker applicatin?, absolutly!!
the main reason they didn't clear is because they are a beefy rod made for durability...... not strokers....
i think they are a good company and i'm sure they are many others out there that will agree with me also....
but it's your money and if ya can afford the good stuff like mentioned above, go for it.....
