400 sbp swap with L69, five speed....tasty.
400 sbp swap with L69, five speed....tasty.
Here's my snag: I have a 400 small block pontiac i've had sitting for a few years, built with crane cam & pistons, polished and other little stuff (caused the original car to crash
oh gosh, another q about the 400 pontiac)....lol... no, but, i have a 82 trans with the L69 engine, 74,000km, so its fresh, and the five speed borg warner, from '88 since they're a bit stronger,(the nice original one somehow blew due to oil loss...)
. I tried the site "chiefmanyhorses.com"...anyone know a complete conversion kit? i need the five speed...lol...and am stupid so need it easy... kinda "bolt-in" hmm... any helpus muchos apreciatos :hail: ! nice website!
Parksey. AKA suckus upus? Thnx guys.

Parksey. AKA suckus upus? Thnx guys. oops...huh, that was quite unclear. Have 400 firebird small block, the standard 400 powerplant pushed 10.75:1 compression and 355Hp stock, but now its, well, umm, better.... Also have a 1982 firebird trans-am with the 305ci chev and a five speed borg warner, currently runnning awsome. Lack of go-go makes me want to put in the 400
... i have done various mechanical stuff, a few resto's (one including a VW bug..lol).. but am not good at the fabrication in any way or form. I have seen people try to put in big blocks etc, with the 350TH (easier).. i was wanting to keep the five speed, its lots of fun. I know it requires the engine mounts, a bell housing converter, and flywheel... the other stuff is little matter... to place in the 400 firebird small block. Have u seen anyhting to do this easily? its the '68 engine, and i've searched man, and gosh do i wanna do it.... sorry bout the stupidness...

Well the Pontiac 400 would shred the T-5 to shreds (especially an 82 T-5).
Look at it this way -- GM never put a Chevy 350 from the smog conscience 80's in front of a T-5 because it ate them up. The 68 Pontiac 400 has loads more torque and will only kill it quicker.
If you really want to put the 68 400 in a third gen, Dick Duclow at chifmanyhorses.com has an install kit.
If you really want a manual, I'd look into a T-56 (possibly). Otherwise stick with the automatic. 200-4R's and 700R-4's can be built to take the abuse.

you would also need an adapter to fit any late model chevy trans onto it. BOP blocks have different bolt patterns for the bell housing.
If you dont have the money for a t56 or a tremec, you can use your T-5, like they said though they are not the strongest tranny but it will work if you drive it correctly, i have had my t5 behind my 406 for the last year with no problems to this date, you will need an adapter plate though like he said...

The replies have been awsome! :hail: I've decided to try the 5-speed despite concerns of havoc (from '88 so its a bit stronger) ...with help from "cheifmanyhorses.com" .it's a replacement tranny so it doesn't matter much....(it was quite the pain to get in though). 200 4r? auto eh? well i hate to drink coffee and drive...lmao .. *air_adam*, nice nudge..but might leave the speedo unhooked for a bit... j/k.
I'll post a picture when i get it out of the garage this summer and park the monte carlos- the 400 is being partially stripped and painted right now...
