Sb 400

I have found a nice deal on a chevy 400 i was wondering will my 85 trans am w/tpi have enough hood clearance for the 400 and carb and aircleaner. Will my original mounts work? and will my rear end withstand a 400?

a 400 has the same dimensions as a 350. the original mounts will work. however it is an externally balanced motor, so you will need a new flexplate and balancer. As long as you run a drop base air cleaner you should be fine for hood clearance with a 3" element. As for your rearend, i would imagine it will be fine as long as you arent running slicks, but any motor on a 7.5" 10 bolt worries me honestly

i managed to fit a sbc 400 with tbi setup, tbi to carb adapter (1/2"-3/4", dont remember) and a flat base 2 1/2" open element air filter setup. so i think you should have some room to work with

If it's a stock tranny it's a 700R4 (All '85 TPI cars were auto's)

Shouldn't be too much of a problem to make it fit. Have fun with the 400 they are a freakin' blast!!

my 406 is with a 700R4 (modified ofcourse) u will have a blast with it. dont expect the same high RPM as a 350, but be ready for the insane low-end TQ.

id have to get list of all the stuff done.. all i know is everything instide was replaced what better stuff. but as far as how far it through me back.. it does a good job of telling me where all the TQ is.. but on street tires.. i just fry the **** out of them and go sideways. on ET streets.. i still spin those like crazy (i have a serious traction issue if u cant tell) but u do get tossed into the trunk department if ur not hanging on

i tried to rebuild my 700r4, and unfortunately, i wasnt so successful. but since the 400 came out of a truck i bought, i snagged the th350 to throw behind the engine. no overdrive, oh well. b&m also makes a conversion kit for our cars that allows you to use the th350 with our torque arm and stock crossmember. it'll set you back around $90 + you need to order the bushings (?) that the torque arm mount in.

400 TPI and 700R4 with shift kit, 3.27 gear and 255/50r16's.

When you shift 2-3 at 60 mph, if your passenger is not paying attention, they will bang the back of their head against the head rest. At 20 mph just roll the throttle down and the rears start to spin. At 30, just hit the throttle and the rears spin. Bunches and bunches of torque down low, and plenty of acceleration up to 90.

406 Carb (Holley 750cfm) and T-5, 3.73 gear and z rated tires 16"

When you are doing 60 in 5th and drop to 3rd the rear tires would chirp (1/4 spin) :hail: . 1st gear was worthless if you didn't know how to drive. 20 mph 2nd gear and drop the hammer would result in a lot of smoke and having to clean the rubber off the rear wheel wells . And the power shifts were amazing. Go big or go home, so if your going small block Chevy go 400.

Man I wish I wouldn't have sold that car.

I know with my 700r4 w/shift kit i squawk the tires stomping on it at 20mph and then when it shifts again at 40 the squawk again.
