454 in a third gen Firebird
454 in a third gen Firebird
Hello all.
I am sure this question has been asked before, but I have not seen it during my search. I have a 1970 Chevelle that has succumed to the cancer, and have decided to do someting rather rash, a C3PO would put it. The 454 has an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and a holley 750 ont at this time, with a 3-in K&N filter. I assume that this will not fit under a stock 1991 Firebird hood, and wondered about my options. A friend of mine pinted this site out to me, and I have seen many LT1/LS1 or LS6 swaps, even some 400SB's. This has nothing to do with my swap unfortunatly, so I decided to ask the following.
I did find an article on this out on the internet, I can post it if anyone is intersted, but the parts called for, half of them are nonexistant at this time. The only one I could find was the Hooker SuperComp Headers, and I almost lost my lunch when I saw the price!
I also plan to add the t-56 6-spd, and reuse the 12-bold car rear from the Velle
This vehicle will see the track and be a daily driver.
Please help me!
1991 3.1 V6 Firebird
Stock chassis
Mods? Sub-frame connectors needed? Distributor? Forced Indnduction, or NOS? (or BOTH?)ect.ect.
Thanks

*what he said*
umm... the 454 will fit with some playing around with the mounts and what not. The 12 bolt will need a lot of moddification as a thirdgen doesnt have leaf springs, is not as wide, and the 12 will need a place to mount the torque arm onto the housing. with a little moving of stuff and addition of coil springs and other modifications, it could fit. The 6spd is a good choice but you might need a bell housing adapter to fit a big block to the 6 spd. I KNOW you will need a new trans crossmember. The headers for these are gunna be long tubes so your gunna sacrafice MAJOR ground clearance. Also, what about emmissions? What about other stuff to stiffen the frame? how about putting it to the ground? any plans on tubbing the rear for bigger tires? Is this gunna be an all out drag car or a minimal street/major track, or major street/minimal track?

teh t-56 requires no modsto the tunnel. But don't worry LT headers will not clear the shift fork with out a torch and a fard tool.
LT1? I alrady know that ther will be a LOT of welding and all kinds of goodies I dont yet know about during this mod. 454 the only way to go! I have to get a 6-pt roll cage since the car is a 91 bird with t-tops, anyone know if the subfame connectors in Jegs are any good? Do I need weld in or bolt in?
Eventually the 454 will be a 496 pushing 900lb-ft. Not all the time of course, but The body will have to take a few runs down the track running a ProStreet Huffer and 350+shot.
Any thing else I should be thinking about?
Are there any Tech articles on tranplating the 12-bolt car axle into the 3rd gen?

yes, i belive there is.. but if you get one made for thirdgens.. there should be no problem, just hook up and go... might have a driveshaft problem... 900ft lbs, you better get some strong **** sfc's. and you might wana think about a 8 or 10 pt cage just to stiffin the chassis.... maybe even 12. That t56 will handle about 500 ftlbsand then its buhbye 6spd as it gets torn off at the flywheel... look into a TH-400 or if you want an over drive, get a 4L80e auto... thoes things can handle a truck, but maybe not 900 ft lbs, but race ones being built now might... thats a lot of power for one car man... and why even bother with an exhaust system really...all i got to say is DUMPS.. custom 2 in primaries to just a turn down... no muffler... mufflers are for ***** econo boxes... 900 ft lbs would torque the bolds off that are holding the muffler in place... im assuming your either gunna make this a strict drag car, or your gunna tow 18 wheelers with this thing... maybe redwood tree stump puller perhaps? that 12 bolt aint gunna hold no 900 ft lbs... your in drag racing land now... normal laws of garage/backyard car modding physics dont apply to you...

I will only get that 900lb-ft if I hit the bottle. I think more like 450-650 is what I would get on the street. The NOS thing is shaky anyway. huffer is more my speed. I hate to say this, but would a (ulp) FORD 9-in be better for my setup, or is there a Gm rear that could take the abuse. It will see the track on a limited, about 4 times a year, basis but it will mainly be my daily driver
