305 history...???

305 is toast............
well my 305 has 182k hard miles on it and almost no oil psi......i am going to replace the engine next week on my vacation myself and need advise......my Z28 currently has a carberated 305 and want to swap to a 350....i live in california and must pass smog stilll. is this a simple swap and will everything from the 305 bolt right up to the 350....thanks in advance...

Almost, but not quite. Only if the 350 is an '86 model, actually.
If it's earlier, your flex plate won't bolt up. If it's later, your intake manifold won't bolt up.
Neither is too big a deal. Get an '82-'85 3rd gen V8 flexplate (or 153 tooth for two-piece rear main seal). Or, elongate the center two intake manifold bolts on each side to fit the different angle bolts the later heads have.
Of the two, I think I'd take the earlier version, because it will look more like your 305.
One other possiblity: If your 350 is of late 70's vintage or earlier, the dipstick will be on the driver's side, which creates an interference problem with the exhaust manifold.

Or check junkyards and stuff...My motor was in a rusted out Longbed truck for sale on the side of the road, We gave the guy $200 and got my motor, And sold the trans for $150...Gotta love it!
