350 swap

I just swapped in a 350 into my 83 camaro

what do you guys think of this setup?

its a '78 block.

i have a weinad tunnelram intake, dual holly 650. holly fuel pump 110 gph, hedman headers. th350 tranny with a b&m shift kit.

for the cam i was going to go with 274/292 duration, hydraulic, Comp Cams Nitrous HP camshaft because i was thinking about adding the nitrous in there so i could hit it right off of the line.

Here's a better nitrous cam that will like the tunnel ram too.

Crane #113861 Specs

This tight lash 114LSA mechanical cam is meant for a street strip NOS motor. You can advance it in the motor a bit to enhance the NOS performance. Install at 106CL.
You'll want a mechanical cam with a tunnel ram and NOS. The motor is going to want to rev.

use a 3000 to 3500stall converter and 3.73's or 4.10's
what converter do you have? what cylinder heads?

You're welcome.

Personally, I wasn't able to spend much time on the boards over the weekend due to competing time commitments. Maybe if they double my pay...

...the heads are whatever were stock on it.
As in, a stock 1978 350?

Those head will be able to flow about 2/3 of what one of those carbs can flow. I think you have a looks-only setup that would be out-run by a properly matched single-650 cfm carb setup.

Just about anything would be better than the stock 78 350 heads.

DART 180 200cc
Pro topline
Edelbrock RPM
Ported World Sportsman II
GM camel back 186 492
Ported, modded 305 heads
Ported GM L98 {TPI} (cast or aluminum)
To name a few

In stock form,,,, just barely. The small combustion chambers will raise the compresion ratio. thats about it.

They have small valves. With full porting and larger valves they can be made into a decent budget performance head.

Castings that end in 416 are best. Need to be fully modified.
if your 350 has stock dished pistons then a small chamber 305 head is a good way to boost the compression ratio for better performance for low $$$'s.

hi perf 1 piece replacement 1.94" and 1.60" valves work well to wake up a modded 305 head. Don't forget .......full porting... you'll want to drill and pin the rocker studs too.

well the heads that were on the 305 were 14014416 so i guess i got a good set. the ones that are on there currently are 338882.

Also, when i took the heads off of the 305, on the piston was scratched in a 30, any idea? It was just on one of them

IMO the 333882's (are what i'm running) are a waste of money. For the same money I dumped into them (around $750) I could have had a set of Vortecs.

Wish I hadn't bought this particular engine as it has sentimental value, and I wanted to use all of it or none.

Prolly means .030 over.

EDIT: Even though I have 333882 heads it still runs really good. After it fired up I wasn't so upset over the money I spent on them. It sounds real good!

Re: 350 swap

Everyone pounds away about how Sh**y these heads are. They are no match for Vortecs or for any good aftermarket head they can be made to get some performance. They were used extensivly throughout short track in the mid 70's and early 80's for stock stock cars......Some of the early 882 heads were better 74-76 Here is a link that talks about flow and HP ratings..You have to tab down to see them. http://www.purplesagetradingpost.com....html#GM%20882
The answer with these heads is that they are crap but every one in here is made of money.....LOL For a average street application for people on a budget they are fine.

Those heads are still used extensively. However, they are not used because they want to, or because they perform well. Those heads are used because they have to be. Certain classes of racing restrict heads to specific casting numbers. No one would Want to run those heads. One time I saw a mag that was claiming amazing flow tests with those heads, and really peaky HP numbers. But the engine was way impractical and the amount of money spent on them was insane.

Re: 350 swap

jjay, you sound like a bitch. you whine because people wont reply to your thread, and whine when you dont hear what you want. your intake/carb combo is gonna cost you quite a bit of torque. and you're planning to run a nitrous cam to fix it, but what does your bottom end look like? running stock pistons/rods on a two bolt main? why dont you add a 250shot and just make this thing a science experiment.

I wouldn't call "weinad tunnelram intake, dual holly 650" your "average street application".

Thanks for bringing up a 3-1/2 year old topic. . .
