305 - 350

Alriht, I've pretty much made up my mind on my 305 to 350 swap. Here's what I'm doing:

350's comming out of an '88 GMC van. Right now it is TBI. I'm takin the TPI 305 out of my camaro and using the 305 heads on the 350. I'm usin an LT1 cam, and a weiland stealth intake. Also, a carter competition series carb. I've got the distributor already. Also, a double roller timin chain, AFPR, and oil pump. Question is, do I need anything else? Will the fuel pump in my car work if I use the AFPR? Will the intake bolt up w/out modification? Will the cam bolt in w/out modification? Basically, I have a list of what I'm doing, and my mechanic is doin it. Help me out with whatever info you have on my setup. Is it good/bad. Keep in mind, money is a big issue.

Some truck TBI motors were non roller blocks. Some of the later ones had the provsions for roller cams even though they did not use them. I would make sure the block can accept your roller cam out of your 305. What year 305 is it?

Sorry, I meant for this post to be a reply in my other thread.

Same thing, my 305's out of a '91, the 350's out of an '88. But now I'm getting confused? I thought all '87 up blocks were roller cams.

So, the 350 I have might not be able to use a roller cam in this motor? Like I've said, this stuff is all pretty much foreign to me. I just take the info I have here and give it to my mechanic. He's going to build the engine for me. I just need to tell him exactly what I want in it, and exactly what needs to be done.

Most trucks had roller blocks but did not use roller cams. The blocks just had the provisions for them. All 87+ F-bods came with roller cams and blocks. You should be fine but you never know until you check. Some 87 TBI cars had 86 heads so..... You never know with GM. You can always check the casting numbers here. www.mortec.com.

The casting number won't tell you if the block was machined for roller cam provisions. You'll have to look at the internals to know for sure. The LT1 cam will only work it it was.

Everything else should work.

Isn't there a good chance that it could also be a 2-bolt main?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought that a lot of those motors were 2 bolts.

Every 3rd gen out there came with a 2 bolt block. Even f-body LT1's were 2 bolt blocks.

Right, so if this guy is planning on swaping in a 350, wouldn't he want to try to look for a 4 bolt then?

No not really. There is nothing wrong with using a 2 bolt main block. Especially with a mild 350. He could always have them splayed if need be.

Ok, new set of questions.
I've come into a little bit of money so I'm going to do this at least semi-right. I'm having the 350 block completely rebuilt. That's a start.

What I want to know is what it would take to run with a stock LT1. Assuming I used the 305 TPI heads and a cam (recommendations?)I'm going to use a weiand stealth intake (which one?) and a Carter AFB competition series carb. I already have a 3 inch exhaust and am going to get headers for it. Also, the car is a 5 speed (we'll see how long it holds up)

So, my ultimate goal is only about 300 horses. So, what would it take?
I really want to use the 305's heads as I don't have money for new ones. Should I port them? How would I go about finding someone to do that?

Sorry about all the questions, and thanks to everyone who's helped me. I really aprreciate it.

As for machine work to the heads, look up auto under the yellow pages, and find shops that offer machine work. Seems to be the best way to locate them. There is a guy here, I think his name is sitting bull ( or something like that), that has a how to on porting heads. If you search you will find it.
