LT1 Engine mount problem
LT1 Engine mount problem
Went to drop the LT1 in using 3rd gen mounts on the engine and on the Frame, and the driver side does not line up properly. it's out by like an inch.
I don't get it, I can always redrill (ugghh) but many people including Z28***** and TexasLT1.
Guys pls say I just missed something and it's gonna line up .... Im not looking forward to redrilling, even though it is a simple solution.
Thanks
if anyone has pics of there installed IE engine going in that would help thanks.

Thats weird, because I have the exact same problem. I still havnt gotten a bolt in my passenger side motor mount, the hole doesn't line up by like 1/4 of an inch. I know for sure I had installed the motor mounts on the xmember correctly and the clamshells correctly.
mines a little differnet it looks like the clam shell doesn;t line up with the mount on a forward backward plane.
the drivers side on the block is to far foward or the reverse of that I guess would be
the driver side mounts is fine, but the passenger side mounts is forward by 1 inch, even thought they are stock.
So whats up with that ..... !!!!
I get pics tomorrow for better clarification but it looks like I might be redrilling

that sounds like the motor mount on the xmember is off one bolt to the wrong side. Or did you install the passenger motor mount farther back to keep AC so that they are lop sided?

I had that exact problem, when I tried to line mine up. Check where you bolted the motor mount to the block. There's several holes there, and if you look, there's a way you turn the mount over, I think, and bolt it an inch or so back.
After I repositioned mine, It all lines up great now.

Ill check on that tomorrow and let you guys know, thx for the tips.
I didn't have a problem until I replaced the motor mounts with ES poly mounts. Then, when I dropped the engine back down, neither side would sit down all the way, they were about 3/8" too high. After looking at the entire driveline trying to figure out where the problem was, it turns out the clamshell was hitting on the metal bars going through the motor mounts, but only on the back side, they were fine on the front. I pulled the clamshells off, took out the grinder, and enlarged the "slots" on the backside of the clamshell until they would sit down all the way to be able to get the bolt through. Took some trial and error and about 2 hours, but no problems now.

Unfortunately my problem, at the moment is that the drivers side is 1 inch forward of the mount and the passenger side sits perfect above the mounts, so I need to somehow move the drivers side mount back or the passenger mount forward by an inch.
then I can run into the issue you just described because I switched to poly as well and those tabs do look like a bit of an issue.
anyways one thing at a time I guess.

Its definately the passenger side mount if you kept AC. If you take the compressor off, you'll see how the clamshell is supposed to mount. This is why you need to modifyt the clamshell to run AC.

Delete pulley is being used - and I mounted it the same way I pulled the LT1 off ..... ill have to check for other mounting holes.
Figured it out, passenger side has 4 holes for mounting the clamshell ... ill post a pic when I can this weekend, but it basically allows the mount to be mount an inch forward from where it is, which will allow the engine to "drop" in.
ill post pics and results this weekend.

For Reference
Ok I took a regular small block and photoshoped it to show people what to look for.
The picture shows the 4 mounting holes on an LT1 block on the passenger side, traditionally the forward most hole is used for the stud holding the AC compressor.
for the engine to "drop" in you need to remove the stud and use the three forward holes ... ala GEN I SBC instead of the three rear holes like an LT1.
hench the modifications to the passenger mounting bracket necessary for AC to be retained.

new to this so bare with me. I put a LT1 in a 91 Camaro rs. I ran into this same problem with engine mounts. I went and looked at several 305 3rd gen's, and also went to my local Chevy Garage and looked at film. what I found out is that this is the way the Engineers at GM made the mounts. The one on the pass. side fit to one hole, but was centered on frame. Used a Bolt to Position, and drilled to make it work. the Driv. side is made to only use two bolts! And I did the same thing for Positioning. Use the hole that lines up, and drill out the other one. Torque from the engine Rotates to that side so you only need 2 bolts to hold it in place. the third hole just hangs out there. Mine came out perfect. If you get a chance go look at the 305's and you'll see that is how GM made them. hope this helps.
I pulled my 305, replaced the engine inserts with poly, took the clamshells off the 305 put them on the LT1 as I described and it mounted perfect 3 bolts for each no drilling necessary.
also the picture above is of a 305. I photo shoped in the mounting whole on the left, the original three are the ones on the right.
