Opinons on this 350 setup
O.k here is my master plan. I need you guys tell what you think and if there is anything I have not thought of.
1. 1992-93 Caprice 5.7L / 350 GM Crate Engine Part#12513151
Its a long block. Comes with Cast flat top pistons and a 2 bolt main. but is completely new and comes with new roller lifters, cam, oil pain, balancer, timing chain, and all tin ware and 65cc Irons. I plan changing the cam and heads to the below items.
Cost $ 1585.17
2. Fast Burn SB Chevrolet Aluminum Cylinder Head Part Number: 12464298
Cost $ $1,179.50
3. Head Gaskets Part Number: 12557236
Cost $27.00
4 . LT4 HOT Cam, 218 / 228 Duration@ 0.050, Hydraulic Roller Camshaft Part Number: 24502586
Cost $175.50
5 . GM Performance Parts 1.6 Ratio Bow Tie Roller Rocker Arms
Part Number: 12370839
Cost $279.95
6. TPIS Mini Ram for Fast burn heads and Fuel line kit
Cost $895 for intake, $355 for line kit and regulator
7. Ford Motorsport 24# injectors
Cost $220.00
8. Ed Wright Dyno tune $550.00
Total cost $ 5,267.12
Should put over 400 hp. TPIS did a simalar set and got 452 hp. Only difference was they were using there ZZ-9 cam.
I will also be converting my car to speed density set up at the same time. I figure the whole conversion with harness and misc. sensors will be about $700.00 additional.
Thoughts? Ideas? I hate doing my own motor work and dealing with machine shops. So this appeared to be the most bang for my buck fuel injection set I could come up with that would have the least installation and over all setup problems.
Motor is going in an 88 IROC TPI 305 car.

No problem, I already have NOS on my current 305. I am running the NOS 5151 wet kit. 150 hp shot. The new motor on NOS is going to be out of control.

It looks pretty decent. A few observations I have: If you are putting that much into heads, save a few more and get AFR (much better head, MUCH MUCH better). For the price of GM rockers, which are aluminum, get Comp Pro Magnums. I believe they are like $20 cheaper and are steel.
Now, regarding the engine. keep in mind, thats a TBI engine. It will have TBI compression. Which, in itself is fine...if you are running a TBI. For your setup, I would look more to the 9.5 to 10:1 range. Aka, new pistons. Hyper's at least. Probably won't have a dual roller chain (like a good aftermarket). That engine is nothing more than a drop in replacement. Think fleet truck.
But, above all, budget is the key thing, and without knowing yours, I am not one to say.

One reason I went with the Fast Burn head is the article link below. I am basically trying to reproduce this motor but at a cheaper price. I am already at my max buget. The fast burn head appears to offer some unique design points that creates extra power on cheap motors. Compression with the flat tops in the crate engine and 62cc heads should yield about 9.6 to 1.
Read this article its very convincing.

Thanks, for the tips. I going to look at those AFR heads. Any particular casting or part number you recommend?

Eithe AFR 180's or 195's. They are available in 68 or 76cc chambers.
Here's a price list so you can compare. The 195's are only like $200 more or so ($1299 for a complete pair). The flow chart's are below the link.

Cylinder heads make the power (in conjunction with the cam and whatnot, of course). You can see just how much AFR out flows the Fast Burns. Even if you went with the 180's, you are still gaining ~30 cfm on the intake side at .550 lift.

That sounds like a cool motor! I have also heard only good things about AFR heads, and if you go with their heads, you may want to ask them about what cam to run for your intended rpm range.
I would also like to know what kind of 1/4 mile times you ran with the 150shot on your 305, and any other mods that you have done to it.

Here are my mods and results on an 1988 305 TPI car.
With 88,000 miles and totally stock the car ran a 16.2 in the 1/4 mile.
1. MSD 6A ingition with Accel coil and MSD wires.
2. Cut out the air boxs, SLP airfoil. 160 theromstat.
3. Shift kit in the trans, Adjustable full pressue regularator and Jet stage II over the counter chip.
4. Hand ported the throttle body and plenum a little.
5. 3.73 rearend gear. (2.73 was the stock one)
6. hypertech fan control switch
7. Headmen 1 5/8 headers with no cats and flowmaster muffler
8. NOS nitrous wet kit 5151, 150 shot.
The car now runs 14.95 on motor and 13.58 on the nitrous 150 shot. Ran 13.8 on the 100 shot. The best mods I did was the rearend gear (got 6 tenths with that mod) and headers and exhaust (got 3 tenths on that one) and the MSD ing. and fan switch (got a 2 tenths on that one). And off course the nitrous kit was good for over a second.
The 150 shot is the way to go.
