thinking about swap
i have an 86 iroc, and i recently put in a 355, but i was thinking about going to an lt1. I am getting a job making 19 an hour so i l will have money. I want to get an lt1 turn it into a 383 and put on the lt4 swap stuf should be pretty stout. And i have to get painless wiring to wire it up. But what all am i going to run into as far as tranny and small stuff. I want to run a 700r4 with a mechanical speedo. Will the motor need anything signals from the tranny if i get the painless wiring harness.

You'll be fine using a 700R4 that has the mechanical speedo setup. You will have to buy a vss converter that will splice into the speedo cable to give the computer a speed referrence. Other than that, everything will bolt up like it should. Also, make sure you have the pcm reprogrammed for a 6-speed car. This will save you from setting codes from the computer not seeing the trans. If you have any other questions or need parts, let me know. I just finished my dad's swap of a 95 LT1 in his 86Z.
1981LT1, did you install a 700R4 with a LT1? My main problem is the TCC.
Blkmaroman, there are better/cheaper performance upgrades that you can do other than a LT4 kit. Look into the LE1, LE2, or LE3 kits. These are mentioned a lot at camaroz28.com, which is a good source for 4th gen stuff.
If you get a 93 LT1, you will have no problem hooking up a 700R4. However, the 95 seems to be the best LT1 to get but you can't always choose what you find.
You probably wont need the painless wiring kit. If you use the LT1 wires that is. Might as well save a few hundred bucks.

yes i used the 700r4. I bought a TCC lockup kit and spliced in into the brakelight switch. I guess I should have mentioned that too.

It was from www.speedscenewiring.com. I think they charged me $65. You can also get one from mr gasket or do a google search for 700r4 lockup kit. It does the same the thing the computer does when in operation. The only thing to worry about is whether the TCC pressure switch is normally closed or normally open. you will be able to tell this when you take off and the trans seems like it is already in overdrive because the coverter is locked. All you have to do is switch the wires on the relay. The instructions that come with the kit will explain all this.
