engine milage
Hey all, i have a 1991 305 camaro. I've really been thinkin about all that i should do to it, and was wandering if it should be in top priority to get an engine swap. its got 170k miles, but still runs great. should i expect it to go out soon? i know many people will already say that just because its a 305 change it to 350 but i was wandering if the miles make it that much worse

A reasonably maintained 305 will run for a very long time.

woah, i didn't think that i needed a rebuild. i just get alot of crap from people saying that i shouldn't do anything to my car because of the milage. it runs just as smooth as any other car i've driven, and i was just wandering if the word going around is right.
ahhh....if you start doing a lot of performance modifications, then yeah you would want to freshen it up with some new bearings, maybe a bore if it needs it, but it shouldn't need anything major.

A well maintained TBI car can run 250K+. People often run into trouble when they add heads and cam, skip the chip tuning, rev it to 6500 rpm and complain when it blows up.

Its a Chevy small block, if its been taken care of reasonably well, then it will last forever. It will probably outlast the rest of the car, if taken care of.

I guess I read through your original post too quickly. I thought you were wondering about upgrades to the current engine, but I believe you're asking if it is worth it to spend money on an engine to put in a high mileage car.
If resale value is your concern, don't bother . If you want to improve your drive, go for it.

no, im not really looking for resale value, because no matter what i do to it, down here in florida 3rdgens are about a dime a dozen.. very commonplace around here. (actually, people favor Mustangs more, so i get alot of shiz for liking camaros)

why do people continue to believe this is the 70's and ANY engine with more than 100k miles needs a rebuild?
