in need of the pros
well, i finally pulled the 305 and found the main bearings melted? and the oil turned into sludge, i couldnt turn the engine in no way to disconnect the torqe conv.so i pulled it out conv. and all,no problem, i bought a 350 casting #3970010 with 17,000 miles on it 4 bolt main it was rebuilt by a reputable mechainic it came out of a 72 3/4 ton pick up with a shiny new rebuilt trans. but unfortunetly the tailshaft in the new trans. is longer than the tail in the 82, can i swap tails? and for that matter can i use the same trans that was on the 305? while i got this 350 out is there anything i should do? ive pulled the oil pan to inspect the innards but im not real versed on internals except common sense stuff, the pistons from what i can see look fine if yall can give me some clue as to what to look for that could be a problem id appreciate it, the oil pump pick up tube(filter) was sitting in the oil pan but when i drove the truck here (home)40 miles the oil pres. was idle at 60psi and ran like a champ in that big assed truck,im sure i wanna avoid that happening again.... i just need a few heads up tips to make this a clean swap, ive got so many busted knuckles and dollar bills in my DREAM car that i dont wanna screw it up and i wanna do the work on it, you know? thanks!! the site has definetly changed i hope the people that know their sh** dont go somewhere else, we will just have to get used to it

The oil pump pick up was laying in the bottom of the oil pan?
Put it back in the oil pump, get it level and tack weld it to the pump so it doesn't fall out again.

If you are using the tranny from the original 305, might as well replace both front/rear seals.

Replacing the seal is simple. Some use plier to rip the old seal off but there is a tool at your local auto zone you can borrow for free. When installing the new seal use a socket or somethig that is the same diameter as the seal to install the new seal. Again check with your autoparts store and ask them if they have the tools to loan out. If not, just take your tranny to the local tranny shop and they can do it for you for less than $20.00. Lucky me, I have an auto hobby shop that has all the tools I need to work on my car(s).
