Mallory also makes a fuel pressure regulator, part number 4309 - that's the one I used. You have to use a return style regulator, only 2-3 companies make them, and they ain't cheap ($80) - but it has to be used with the TBI pump.
In hindsight, I was thinking that if I ever did this again, I'd just swap in the carb pickup in the tank, and get an external pump, as I went through alot to get my fuel pressure right with the in-tank pump. Odds are, with the age of the car, you will need a new pump soon anyways (I've replaced in each of my cars, a 1990 and a 1992). Maybe check with the guys that replaced the pump with a carb pickup and external pump and see what kinda trouble they had, and compare the lesser of both evils.

Both of the suggested regulators are return style, which is a must when using the in-tank electric pump.
What you can assume is that sooner or later, you'll be dropping the tank to replace the fuel pump. They just don't last forever. Whether you do it now and put in a straight pickup and an external pump, or wait until the pump quits is up to you.

It's really just a matter of choice - TBI pump and regulator, or carb pickup and external pump. If your TBI pump functions now, go for it with a regulator - mount it on the fenderwell somewhere, get the brass connectors to fit it to your fuel lines (the flexible part on the driver fenderwell), and run with it. Later, when your TBI pump does die, then replace it - or replace with the carb pickup, get the external pump, and remove the regulator.
All we're saying is that sooner or later, that in-tank pump will go out, and you'll have to tackle it one way or another.
This is the easy part of switching to carb - the fun part is getting the geometry of the TV cable correct on the carb linkage without frying your auto tranny!
