882 heads

i recently got the new chevy high performance and they made 375 hp at the crank with a set of ported 882's. do you guys think that it would really work out that well. or should i just go with vortecs

Don't bother with 882s... a set of unmodified Vortecs still have lots more potential than a set of ported 882s have. Ditch the 882s, get the Vortecs.

people on this site always bash 882's but if you have ported 882's i wouldnt pay for vortecs, they are better than people say. id save my cash and get good aftermarket heads. if you havent got either then i wouldnt buy 882's.

I would not even use 882s in ported form. You can get more power from 193s than you can from 882s. Stock for Stock, Vortecs will blow both out of the water in terms of flow.

882s problems aren't so much in how much they flow. They flow about the same as any other 'vintage' SBC head will. The problems with them, is that they have very large chambers, needing domed pistons to get the compression to a reasonable level for performance. The chamber design is also very detonation prone, compared to alot of other stock heads. The last, is that they are lightweight castings, and are very prone to warping and cracking.

yea, once you port them to flow nice, they are paper thin. Overheat them a bit, or run into a bit of detonation, and boom, coolant in the oil time, maybe hydrolock, etc.
416's are thicker, and can be ported up nicer, IMHO, hence why I used them in my case.
Anyway, yea, vortecs.

Exactly... Once you get the 882s to a point where they flow resonably well, they are cut so thin that its only a matter of time before they crack or warp.

416 or 601 heads flow better stock, they have more potential after porting, and have a smaller and better chamber design, very similar to the old camel hump heads. Install the 350 sized valves (1.94/1.50 or 1.94/1.60) in the 305 heads, and you'll be walking by all the 882 equipped 350s.

They don't have hardened exhaust seats (unleaded fuel) or bolt holes in the ends for accessories (alternator)
Vortecs are much better.

186's, 461s with accessory holes. Only drawback to the vortecs are you are limited to the intakes to run since the intake ports are different on the vortecs.

just go with the 034 Bowtie heads they are getting alot easier to find for a decent price and flow pretty decent. I like them better than the vortec's myself. just my opinion though.
