is this a good weekend street warrior combo?
I have a 1985 camaro with an eagle balanced 383 stroker kit in a 4 bolt main 350.
- 700r4 tranny with 3:42's
- Edelbrock perfomer rpm
-4160 holley 750
-Gm high performance HEI
-heads:305 castings with 2.02, 1.60 and angle job
-1 5/8 hedman shorty's
I am looking at the following to buy. will this be a good combo with the above.
- comp cams XE 274/286 lift with 1.5 rockers is .487/.490,rpm range 1800-6000.
I currently have 1.6 roller rockers I want to use so with the cam above I figured the new lift would be .519/.522 with an approximate rpm of 2500-7000.
I planned on the TCI street fighter conveter which states 1500 stall above stock , so I assume about 2700 stall. Is this a good combo or what am I missing.

Carb: 750 CFM 4150 double pumper like List 4779. If you're willing to live without a choke, go with the HP series.
Heads: Exactly what 305 heads are we talking about here? If 601, 416, or 081 - Fully ported, screw-in rocker studs (or at least pin the press-in studs). Top of the guides cut so you have at least .582" travel from valve seated to retainer contacting the stem seal (assuming you put on positive-type stem seals). New valve springs such as Comp 981 and new retainers to match.
The tranny had better be built to handle the engine.
The cam powerband won't change significantly with the 1.6 rockers.
For the weekend, more stall would put a bigger smile on your face. Consider a higher-end, smaller converter like Continental, something in the 3000-3500 stall range. No frowns during the week, either. A bunch of weekend warriors around here swear by ATI.

Off hand I don't have the head casting #'s but they are fuuly ported. My springs are rated @ 125#s @ 1.70 from the machine shop and I figured they are @ .540 max lift. That is with .060 clearance. I bought the heads off of e-bay years ago, mistake trying to save money. So you think approx. 2700 stall is not enough. The tranny is an 1985 700 r4 with 13,000 original miles with a trans-go shift kit. No other mods to tranny

My experience has been that the cam "powerband" is always lower than where the engine actually picks up. I'm about 300 RPMs short of that point in the Camaro with 2500 stall and a ZZ4 cam.
The shift kit should help. How long it lasts is anybody's guess.
Knowing the head casting #'s would be helpful.

That combo is VERY close to what I had in my car last summer... same heads, cam, intake (though mines an AG), headers. Only difference is I have a 750 DP, MSD ignition, and 4-spd.
With a gear 3.23 or shorter, and a 2000+ converter, you'll be very happy. Despite what you might think by the cam specs, it makes for a VERY torquey combo with those 305 heads and RPM intake. Makes a huge amout of power from about 1700-5700 rpm with the XE274 and 1.94/1.50 valve 305 heads I used (11:1 CR), with the bulk of the power from about 2500-5000 rpm.
Its a very driveable combo too.... got some chop, but idles fairly smooth at 800 rpm, and pulls pretty good from 1500 up. Was actually my daily driver through the winter - which it started up on the first crank when it was -45* BTW

The heads are 354434, 1975-1976 engine 262-305, in. 1.72, ex. 1.30, 62cc. The valve have been machined and have 2.02, 1.60, have been ported, 7/16 studs, bronze guides. The spings seats are not machined. and the chanbers are still 62cc.

Ouch! Those are pretty poor heads. Hopefully you can find something better.

Ick... find some better castings. I used 601, but the 416s are just as good.
