Re: 3.1v6 to v8 wiring

Can you tell which wires are for the coil, lights, and alternator?

I might be able to help you decipher a few of those. Doing a project like yours, you really should have a wiring diagram. There are very good ones in the Chilton's total car care manual and decent ones in the Haynes manual as well. You need the firebird specific one if you are hunting headlight wires as well.

Let us know...

hey krisw
i'll have to look into a manual the only one i have is for 82-92 camaro is it that hard to get rid of computer but keep lights. light wires are easy to follow, found starter wires i think, not sure about coil or dist there are four sets of wires that have been cut. don't know what this car had for a dis set up in cap coil or what.

Do you mean the gauge lights, or headlights? Doesn't matter, as if you scrap the computer, all of the lights will still work just fine....

The coil wire connector will share a pigtail with the EGR connector. It honestly doesn't matter though, as I'm assuming you'll be running a carburetor with your new setup, correct...?

Sounds like you already have your starter wiring already sorted out. All that's really left is your ignition wiring (and fuel pump, if you opt to run the stocker, which I would recommend). For simplicity, get yourself a distributor w/an internal coil. All of the other ECM wiring you can discard (since your running aftermarket gauges, which come with their own wiring)....

Re: 3.1v6 to v8 wiring

You would have had a remote coil distributor. Everything in our cars had that after 86...

Your ignition coil will need the big fat PINK wire under the hood that comes on when the ignition switch is on. That wire will run your HEI cap-in-coil setup for the engine you put in. If you decide to run your electric pump with a fuel pressure regulator for your carburetor then you will need to put in an oil pressure switch on the engine to turn it on and keep it on with oil pressure. There is an orange wire (12v hot at all times) and a grey wire (powers the fuel pump) under the hood that goes to this plug. If you don't have this plug anymore (there is probably a third wire that goes to this plug for the oil pressure gauge in the dash) then you can tap these same color wires from the fuel pump relay to make it work.

He is more than likely switching to a vacuum advanced distributor for his carburetor, and although our cars came with an external coil for the 87 and up models, this doesn't mean he's limited to it. An internal coil distributor will reduce clutter (which is what he's looking to do), and work exactly the same way as an external one (only difference is the larger cap, of course). It's a simple three wire hookup (completely bypassing the ECM, because of the different ignition module), and will work exactly like the stock dizzy, if not better.

you got it going back to the basic in cap coil hei you say its a three wire hook up? the motor its in now only has two one to batt side and one for my tach. unless you mean the plug from cap to dist. internals its got three.

I was comparing ignition modules. The computer controlled modules have more than three, which get pig-tailed to the ECM....

One big fat pink wire for the HEI hookup, like I said before...
