Re: question about 305 swap?
big problems, sort of...
The crank is balanced differently so those two engines use different flywheels. The heads are different so the intakes don't swap either. Your 305 has a roller cam and the old one does not. There are lots of differences but nothing is impossible...
Better to get an 87 or newer 305 (or 350) and drop that in while re-using your front accessory drive and heads / intake combo.
Unless that 85 305 is free or near free I'm not sure I'd go that route. Even if it's free, you still will spend enough money to do it right that you probably could have gotten a newer 305.

Re: question about 305 swap?
I wouldn't call those "big problems". The cranks are balanced the same, but the bolt pattern is different so a new flywheel or flexplate is needed. The heads and intakes are different, but the 87 heads and intake can be put on the 85 block.

Re: question about 305 swap?
yeah, but then add the loss of the roller cam and...
anyway, I'm just saying that there are so many 305s out there you could start with a better one...
if it's free, take it!!!

Re: question about 305 swap?
I wouldn't be too worried about losing the roller cam. The profiles on a factory roller cam aren't so hot anyway. As long as it's all apart you could put in a new aftermarket flat tappet cam and come out ahead. It would be nice to have an aftermarket roller cam in a factory roller block instead, but if it's a budget issue then work with what's available.

Re: question about 305 swap?
400 seems a little steep for something that you'd only use the shortblock from.

Re: question about 305 swap?
You'd want 87 or newer, and all you really need is the shortblock.
