If you're ripping everything out and dropping in a carb'd engine, all you need is the old HEI with vacuum advance. The only thing your computer can do for that setup is cry...

Also, with a 500HP engine, you're probably not too worried about the torque converter lockup for highway cruising and mpg. If you are, you can buy a kit to manually lock it up from most aftermarket guys like Jeg's or Summit.

I have been down this road. got rid of the 305 tpi and computer and dropped in a 500plus horse 406. Encountered no problems and all I had to do was get an electrician to rewire the factory gauges.check it out Ran an 11.8 first time out. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2927006

You could have removed your sending units from the 305 and put them on the 350 and they would have worked fine...

Well...

Sometimes words can not adequately express my feelings; what can I say?

It made me laugh as well after reading it again!

Re: Swapping From 305 to Older 350

for the guys that done it. im goin to be swapping 70's engine into my 92tbi car. questions here are......will i need a new flywheel? its an auto car. but i keep hearing stuff about the flywheel. not sure if its just for the 5 speed cars or not. but it comes iwth the starter also. so if i change flywheels. what would i do about the starter? next question. about the carb setup. dont they sell a carb linkage for this swap? im kind of planning early. but its not to early. it will get swapped in 2 months. just trying to get as much info as i can so i dont run into problems when im in the process. help if you can guys! thanks!

same starter for sure and i'm pretty sure the flywheels are interchangeable as well...the linkage can be found at most junkyards relatively cheap..

Take out the wiring and sensors associated with the computer and leave everything else. As has been discussed many, many times here, that can be done without cutting a single strand of copper.

With what is left, everything else will work - starter, gages, alternator, etc.

Re: Swapping From 305 to Older 350

I'm in the process of cleaning also my engine bay as this 85 transam got rid of the LG4 and have an old carb 355 now but having hard time with all that messy harness stuff, looks like everything is inter-connected... unpluged everything from driver's side ECM ... but then have wires from ECM going down to the starter..?? ( should I take them of ? ) and also other wires running seems under the car trans lock-up maybe , or in the dash???) Also wanna keep the wires for engine temp and oil pressure as some aftermarket gauges had been hooked and orinla wires are somewhere in the engine bay...
HELP!!! thanksss! How can't I find any pictures of that process step by step ???

Re: Swapped 85 tpi transam 305 to 87firebird 350 and need help

I have a 85 transam and just dropped a 87 firebird crate engine in it. She runs good except for when I ride street for more than 15min then she gets up to 220-235 degrees on the dash. I have a new stock radiator,185degree therm, Im not loosin coolant and i just got the system flushed.Do you think the water pump is to blame? Also what parts do you recommend me to change from the stock 305 to better benefiit and upgrade the performance of the new 350. I heard I need to change the 305 fuel injectors to 350 fuel injectors. Is this Correct? Please any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks
Caine

Re: Swapping From 305 to Older 350

also if you wanted higher compression you could use the 305 heads on the 350
