396?
396?
Hey guys, what's up? I'm interested in swapping the 350 out of my GTA, and putting something like a 396 in it, and an ACCEL DFI(Possibly) super ram intake. I know that I can find a used 396 pretty cheap(Around $800), add some decent 2.02 heads(Would like aluminum, but probably sportsman class 2 heads), with a pocket port, and a full rollver valve train, and shaft mount rockers. What do you guys think?

396 BBC? Installing a 396 into a third gen is no different than installing a 427, 454 or 540. It just happens to be the smallest car BBC. There's a tall deck 366 BBC but it has no performance potential.
396 SBC? How do you make a 396 SBC?

Re: 396?
That's a pretty extreme stroke for an LT1 engine.
$800 for a used 396? What's wrong with it? A 396 LT1 crate engine is around $8000.
Cost effectiveness, it would be better to just build a 383 for about $1500 less.

yeah 383 is not far off most 396 builds so you might as well do that. i doubt you'll find 383's and 396's in the junk yard

Re: 396?
i think the reason that the lt1 crowd likes this combo so much is cause it's about as big as an lt1 will get, without running a converted 400block, but that's probably more expensive than a 396 lt1.
i have a 1pc rms 350 here at the house and have been looking at the 3.875" stroke...i think it'd be cool...different ya know?

Re: 396?
the crate motor i want to get is based off the zz4 block, just a 1piece rms roller block and is clearanced for a 4 inch stroke. buddy of mine here has one and it seems like a very cool way to do 408 inches without a 400 block

well, with the 400 block becoming more and more scarce, and when you're looking to build a solid foundatio on a budget (ie forged bottom end, but not going with a little "m" block and callies crank and whatnot) it seems like a very good way to build a bigger cube small block. you can build a SOLID 396 or 408 for right around $5000 and make ~600hp n/a....sounds good to me
only thing i don't like about it is how far it pushes the wrist pin up the piston...doesn't seem very reliable...good thing my junk will most likely always be n/a and is no longer my DD
