Engine Factory 383 Crate Engine

Looking to put a daily driver/weekend warrior setup in my 88 iroc MAF TPI. Currently has L98 350 with alotta miles. was wondering what you guys think of this engine with the performance upgrades. I spoke to the company and they state this engine will pass the sniffer test in New York. I realize that it's pricey, but due to a spine injury, I can't do alot of my own work. Company states engine with upgrades will give me 400 HP and 450 TQ. Below is a link to the page. What do you guys think?

Hope I didn't screw up the link!

Man, sorry to hear about your injury, that can't be fun.

It does seem a bit pricey, but also looks like they're putting some good stuff on/in it. You might check on the TPI forum as well, but from what I understand, people usually go to a speed density system for the higher output engines due to MAF limitations. 400/450 might be a little optimistic, but you're certain to see gains from your stock engine.

Re: Engine Factory 383 Crate Engine

Thanks for the input! I appreciate it very much. Since I'm in the planning stage for a new engine, Tranny and rear, I've got alot of research to do. It's not like I have anything better to do right now. Thanks again!

Using this engine as a "baseline" http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD360...ripEngine.aspx

From a power standpoint, I'll believe SD achieved what they claim. Assuming roughly 1 HP/Cu In, adding 33 more cubic inches would get you to 390 HP. Not knowing exactly what cam they're using in the 383, hard to say how it compares to the Hot Cam. The real limitation, I believe, is the TPI system itself - I wouldn't assume off-the-cuff you'll get a HP increase proportional to the displacement increase. The other area of concern is exhaust - I'm sure they used dyno long-tube headers to get that 357 HP, as would the Engine Factory folks. Using long tubes in a 3rd gen involves compromises.

I don't know how to compare the Edelbrock E-Tec heads to the SD upgraded Vortecs. I don't like that they call them "fast burn" (Edelbrock doesn't), because GM makes heads called "Fast Burn", which are worth 30 HP on a ZZ4 crate engine over the Vette-type aluminum heads. It's a mixing of terms, basically, which is either from ignorance, or an intent to deceive.

By the way, either one of these engines: Put a 750 CFM Holley carb on it with RPM intake, gain 30 HP.

Re: Engine Factory 383 Crate Engine

Thanks for another consideration. I clicked on the link for their EGR kit and it states the following:

The SDPC TPI Vortec Baseplate will accept the factory EGR system from most Corvette applications. All other applications will require EGR Modifications. EGR kit # SD3816 has all of the necessary components required for most applications that are using CARB approved headers on F-Body cars. The TPI Vortec Baseplate has not been approved for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles in any state of the USA. Please check with local laws for EGR requirements.

This wasn't stated in the notes for the intake link.

Not that an inspector in NYC would even know this, just don't want to have any issues with emissions should I ever make a crazy decision to sell the car after I fix it up.

You realize the SDParts Vortec TPI base and the Edelbrock Vortec TPI base are the same thing.

Since you only mentioned emissions sniffer, I assumed visual wasn't an issue.

Re: Engine Factory 383 Crate Engine

visual isn't an issue until the engine fails emissions, then the inspector may look, but probably wouldn't even know the difference. That's if I can't go to "MY GUY" anymore if you know what I mean. I am to add the engine you posted from SDParts to my list of considerations. They Dyno tested with Edelbrock runners, 52mm throttle body and 1 7/8” headers. Price is great. Thanks!

Re: Engine Factory 383 Crate Engine

I bought an Engine Factory chevy 383 stroker for my Truck. I did a long research with different crate engine companies. The Engine Factory, Matt and Bruce, is absolutely amazing.
They built the engine for my needs, I am towing my Harley once in a while. Also when you have questions, they will have an answer for you!
Get the matching March serpentine system also, it not only looks great but works even better. The engine is hot tested and runs right out... of the box. Everybody who has seen it so far is just wowed. I wanted a daily driver I can depend on and that is what I got.
This was one of the best decisions I made on the truck!
Good luck, give them a call you will not regret it.
