1987 GTA, Few Qs about goin carb

I just pulled the TPI 350 out today. I got done about 20 Min ago and me and my stepdad are worried we might run into problems. We have our smallblock almost done and behind it is a TH400. We are going carb and we dont know if we will have any issues or a big money thing coming up taht we dont see. Im taking eveything I dont need off of the car. I will keep power steering and heat but thats about it. For the speedo, we pulled the wires off of the back of the tail shaft..wont my speedo not work if I take out the ECM? Iv read over and over that it still works but we are very concered that this is going to be a big headach..let me know or point things out that we should know.

Thanks a lot
Joe

You are still going to need the ecm if you want to use the original speedo setup.I don't know if the speed sensor will fit in your th400 though.
In this swap, what are you planning to do with the engine harness?
Cut everything off that youre not going to use?

Well Iv read that you can just unplug it all and get rid of it. but Yes I want it all gone. The car looks good on the out side its time for the underside and engine to fit the look..

I'm not 110percent sure, but as far as the speedo goes I think you're going to have to find a speed sensor that works in a th400 from an aftermarket co. and also work with your 87 electronic cluster.
Either that or run a speedo cable and find a cluster that is cable driven.

The speedometer drive doesn't go through the ECM. There is a separate module for it. Output from the module goes to both the speedo and ECM.

With a TH400, you're going to have to find an aftermarket speed sensor.

There's a sticky in the top section of the Carb forum about converting your in-tank electric pick-up to a manual.

What are you doing for the transmission crossmember?

Your driveshaft is going to be too short.

I can't point you to anything specific. Try searching the Transmission and Drivetrain forum, and Google it.

Re: 1987 GTA, Few Qs about goin carb

i cant help you with your speedo problem i put an after market speedo with a spedo cable i rigged using the idea behind the vw bug (long complicated explination your better off gettin the right thing than go that direction) and i put my own tach cuz i liek to shift my th350 myself.. anyway unless your going to go the clutch fan rout (i wouldnt recomend it) u need to find some wireing for an electric fan and either a fan thermostat or an indash switch (what i did cuz its cheaper) and you might have a clearence issue with the carb depending on the size of your manifold usualy the edelbrock performer and an edelbrock carb with a drop base cleaner will fit (birds have less hood clearence than camaros) but if you want power and have a double pumper n a decent size manifold you need to cut a hole or maybe get one of the fancy ws6 rip of hoods

You might try these guys: http://www.terf.com/

Understand I'm not "endorsing" them, as I haven't dealt with them (yet - considering their electrical to mechanical box - the opposite of what you need).

About half-way down the page, they have "Full Selection of Traditional Mechanical Bolt Up to Electrical Signal Conversion Sensors", "MATE OLDER STYLE MECHANICAL TRANSMISSION AND TACH SIGNALS TO OUR ELECTRONIC RATIO ADAPTERS AND ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS". But, the page is under construction. Try giving them a call.

At least they have a toll-free number (my fat fingers first typed "tool-free" - hopefully they're "tool-free" as well. . . )

You shouldn't need anything for the tach. Just use the white (I believe it is) wire from the coil. If you use a distributor for separate coil, you can use the coil you have now and not have to change any wiring for the tach.

Re: 1987 GTA, Few Qs about goin carb

Ill give them a call tm and see. And Im using a Wieand Team G High rise with a demon on top. Iv got a Ram Air hood, Iv done my math and measuring, I think Ill be fine with a thin air cleaner. Iv also found a site that has a 4l60E to Th400 conversion and Im ganna call them and see if they can direct me somewere or how. I just want the engine to look clean and prefect..not lose wires and stuff. Thanks everyone..and Im ganna check out the cooling section and see what I cant find out what radiator will do what I need.

Re: 1987 GTA, Few Qs about goin carb

the stock SPEEDO will work, as long as its a cable, the stock gauges may not work without the computer, u can easily go to a swap meet or something and get some cheap autometers, i picked up a volt meter, tach, oil psi, water temp, all new condition, all for like 30 bucks, all seperatly, so just keep your eyes out, but with the 400 i heard you have to cut the back of the trans tunnel to make it fit, idk if that is fact yet or not, but besides that, i dont think you will have much problems

It's not cable, that's why the discussion.

We already addressed that. The gauges and computer don't have anything to do with each other.
