70s 383 swap into 89 IROC HEELP
70s 383 swap into 89 IROC HEELP
Heah guys I have a 383 storker I just had built. It came from a 76 camaro. I want to put it into a 89 Iroc.
I have done engine swaps before on 70's camaro/novas's but have never done any work with TPI/FI or messed with ecm systems. i DONT WANT START EITHER.
My goal is to put my 70's gen 383 carbed out into the iroc and have the 700r behind it.
What elese do I need to be concerned with in this swap. Ie Serpintine belts/starter/alternator set up. Dont care bout ac t-tops just fine.
Any help or someone with pics of doing this would be greatly appreciated.. thankx

Well I have a comlete 383 stroker from oil pan to demon carb with kn extreme air filter on this bad boy. I spent 2 years saving to build it up. The specs are 410 horse and 430 tourqe. This was all done at a local macine shop.
From my understanding I would have to do extensive fiddling with a TPI system plus more cash to make it work... Unless Im worng?
My main concern is putting this carbed motor into the iroc what problems am I going to encounter. Sepentine and altenator and power steering? This is a GEN 1 block.
So if anyone out there has put a Gen 1 350/383 into their camaro and left it carbed I would greatly asppreciate some help/pointers...

Read the welcome to the carb forum sticky in the top section of the Carburetor forum. There's a link in there about converting from EFI to carb.

Well, putting a carbed motor into a FI car isn't exactly "free", either.... even if you have the whole motor including the carb. You'll need to do modifications to the fuel system and the torque converter lockup, if nothing else.
As far as "extensive fiddling", that depends to some extent on exactly what the motor is. Lots of people use TPI on 383s.
I'm not a big fan of TPI, myself; but I'm even less of a fan of haphazardly hacking up cars and destroying their value (yes, that's a "cost" of such a conversion, even if it doesn't come out of your pocket right then and there.... it's more like signing a contract to pay a sum of money on some future unknown date). IMO it's best to work within the framework that the car establishes, which in the case of a FI car, is FI. But that's just my opinion.
Keep in mind, it's highly unlikely that you'll get your carbed setup not to use SIGNIFICANTLY more fuel than FI; meaning, whatever money you think you "save" up front by using your existing carb, may well disappear RAPIDLY and REPETITIVELY in your operating costs. Like, the difference might even out in 3 months, and then EVERY 3 months from now to eternity, you will pay that same cost AGAIN. Over and over and over and over. A definite opportunity for "penny wise and pound foolish".
An accurate and complete description of the engine would help. Giving HP and torque specs is useless. To me, those are so low anyway, that it sounds like the cam and heads and so forth, are entirely within a range where EFI may be practical with no internal changes to the engine. If the motor did 410 HP on an engine stand, it will do probably 350 HP TOPS when installed in a chassis; not out of the ordinary at all.
Keep in mind also, whatever parts you don't use off your carbed setup (carb, intake, etc.) can be sold to recoup cash.
You might want to consider doing that, and replacing that induction system with an aftermarket replacement for TPI, such as the Holley Steath Ram.
"Sunk costs" (money already spent) is not a good argument for continuing down any given path, without a realistic, objective, unbiased evalution of the wisdom of it.

I just did what you are describing to 89 RS conv. over the past few weeks. My car was original 305 tbi, put in 79 350 carb. motor from corvette, with new rebuild by me, has 700r4,used original serp. system,Contact me if I can be of any help,I don,t think I ruined integrity of (my) car by putting in different engine.

i dont know if this has already been said or not i only skimmed through those who have already posted... but do you have headers made for an f-body car??? most likely you have the headers for the 2nd gen camaros and those wont fit you need f-body secific or block huggers to work your exhaust out... also the f-body is a hell f alot more skimpy on the chassis side than your usual 2nd gen or nova... yu should seriously think about gtting subframe connectors som better front struts if you dont want that tourqey stroker ripping your car in half...

get a good set of hooker, edelbrock, or slp headers....no others they just dont fit....and not block huggers, shortys.... i got block huggers once they dont fit.... o and dont let the Tuned Port ***** bug ya people get offly mad if u dont keep the TPI cars fuel injected lol.... they like cars that fall flat on their faces at 4500rpms in stock form, and aparently they are all rich and can afford the parts to make them breathe slightly better..... good luck with the swap im in the middle of the same on my 89 iroc..
Re: 70s 383 swap into 89 IROC HEELP
Who makes the best headers for this project guys? SLP Edelbrock... Quality vs money.. What is gonna give me my most bang for my buck..
Oh and for stats on horse and tourqe. Someone previously in this post said I would be lucky to get 350 horse out of this motor...
Man what you be smoking... Its a 383 stroker with Patriot Heads comp cam and scat crank and denom 750 carb... I would be mighty pissed if I was only pushing 300 horse...
PS Patriot Heads rule made in America the way all of our stuff should be made... DAM Chineese.. sorry guys had to get that out...

Dude i have hooker hearders, hooker y pipe and flowmaster cat back american thunder system for exhaust....o man does she sound pretty... my fourth gen buddy with his nice $1200 borla system is gealous of the sound. and i know ur asking bout performance not sound but i just had to get that out. performance wise it has nice smooth free flowing bends and while i dont have dyno results i tell ya when i swapped from my first system (flowtech headers, custom ypipe and singe chamber muffler) to this it was like night and day...better throttle response, better power down low and up hi... gotta love hooker..and right on bout the patriot performance good stuff right there specialy for the money...

What kind of coin did that run ya in total? Did ya buy it all from the same place as a package?
Do you have any pics of the setup from underneath?
