Like to get some opinions

I've got a 350 out of an 88 silverado with 66000 miles on it. Here's my plan for it.
Edelbrock RPM cam
Edelbrock RPM air gap manifold
Hooker headers
Holley 750 double pumper
Vortec heads from scoggin dickey modified to accept more lift

What do you think?
Digital dyno claims about 400-450 hp from this setup... however I don't know.

Honestly I would rather be safe first by having it taken care of at a machine shop to be assured everything is within specs, and that everything will seal up as it would need to be.
Personally with a used engine I think it would be insurance for down the road if your looking to put a good amount of miles on it.

Hey TodD,

Yes, as 885speed said, take the block to a machine shop and get it honed and cleaned...it may need to be bored as well as having the mains align honed depending on how hard the previous owner ragged on it.

What kind of car is this going in? Where are you doing this build? Do you need to obey smog laws?

An Air Gap manifold will not fit under a stock hood....its too tall once you hook everything up to it (from everything I've been able to find on it) though a performer will probably work just fine. An RPM cam will be fun but I would look at something in the 530 and up intake/exhaust, 270's on advertised duration...and 110 or 112 on the LSA. With the Vortecs, best stock heads you can buy. Hooker headers, 2010 I believe are shorties that do not have the smog AIR tubes. 2055 if you need the smog. YOu dont' need a 750 double pumper, I'd look into a Q-Jet personally.

Also, for 400-450 HP, you're going to want to go with a better set of rods/crank than comes in the 350 you got. Scat Cast crank runs $159 and is good through 500hp, I-beam rods run $299 a set and are also good to 500hp.

I just built a 350 out of a 96 Silverado so I just went through it all. there really is alot more that goes into it than you realize.

Re: Like to get some opinions

Well it came out of a silverado that was owned by an older gentlemen that I know. It wasn't ragged on really hard at any point in its life. It's going into an 84 camaro that I just pulled a 350 out of. Hood clearance won't be an issue. I got an 84 and an 88 camaro for free from my brother. Sweet deal if you ask me. They aren't in good shape at all, but I've been working on them a little at a time, hopefully have it done by the end of summer. (primer and body work done, and street legal) I'm not looking for a show car, more like the weekend hot rod that I can just play around with. Going to go with hooker headers. Any reason other than the 750 being overkill to not get it? The fiance was going to buy me any carb I wanted (within reason) for my birthday and everybody always says "750 Double Pumper!!" so I figured why not. How long do you think the stock internals would last on only the modifications I've listed? I'm not shooting for 400-450 hp, that's just what digital dyno tells me that will achieve. I personally don't believe that just heads and a cam will do that. But, what do I know? I've never built an engine before but I've got the help of two dirt track racers and a former chevy mechanic when I need it. However, they told me to buy the parts and then they'd help me put it together. I appreciate the help and any other tips would be fantastic.

Edelbrock cams are expensive paper weights. Get a real cam. There are plenty of choices that won't kill you on the low end or in the pocketbook.

Air Gap intakes are no taller than their respective non-Air Gap type - i.e., a Performer RPM Air Gap is no taller than a Performer RPM. Many members have those manifolds with Holley carb and drop base air cleaner under a stock hood.

A stock crank is fine for 450 HP. But, DD is a little generous with its rating. The Edelbrock cam might peak around 400 HP with the rest of that combo, but it will be a dog down low.

What Hooker headers?

Summit part number 60121...that's what I got. It's a lunati Voodoo roller cam and should be pretty good for what you're after. There are all kinds of options but for what you're looking for, I'd stick with something in the .500 lift area, 110 or 112 LSA and 270-ish advertised duration.

Is the block machined for the roller lifter provisions?

Re: Like to get some opinions

sounds good.
the carb may be a little too much, but i would rather have too much than not enough.
the engine sounds straight but if you change heads and cam, that may be more than the bottom end can handle.
i have an article in this magazine from 03. the guy put some fresh heads on a worn bottom end and his car was running 113 mph in the quarter,
so it can be done.

Re: Like to get some opinions

I may go ahead and change the bottom end too, what parts do you recommend for that? I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money, but I don't want cheap junk either.

The stock bottom end will handle what you're talking about, assuming it received regular oil changes.
