Critique This

I'm in the early stages of mapping out what I want to build for a motor. I know I'm going stock bottom end punched out .030 need be it. Going to start with a 1 piece RMS block with roller provisions.

I've got a general idea of what I want to do. Going to build everything Holley name brands, so critique my plans. I'm aiming for 375-400hp at the crank. So far I've got it planned out for...

Rebuilt stock bottom end.

Vortec Heads - Still looking for suggestions on cast. I've read the right ones will support and flow up to .550 lift with after market springs and no machining.
What company makes these springs that I keep reading about?

Lunati 1.5 or 1.6 Stamped Rockers

Need cam suggestion

Weiand Action Plus Manifold

Undecided Holley Carb 550-650 CFM's

Ideas, comments, Feedback. My cam selection is where I need the most help. This will be a daily driver/ street car. I'm aiming for 15mpgs driving like an old lady

Re: Critique This

My Suggestion:

- 350ci roller block
- Lunati or GM powdered metal rods
- Hyper or Forged pistons, flat top 1.56" compression height (forget cast)
- GM steel crank
- Hyd Roller cam in the 230-236* @ .050 range (Lunati has a good one in their 'VooDoo' line of cams IIRC)
- Vortec heads machined for .550+ valve lift, screw-in studs, guideplates (you'll need the screw-in studs with the kind of valve springs you'll want for the big cam)
- Weiand Stealth intake manifold
- Lunati roller rockers (though I HIGHLY recommend the Comp Pro Magnums)
- Holley 4778 or 4779 carb (700 or 750 double pumper)

You haven't mentioned though, what transmission, rear end gear, and what exhaust you will be using with this car?

Re: Critique This

Hehe theres no car yet... It will be a Monte Carlo. 3.73 posi rear and most likely longtubes with a 3in collector, x pipe if I can fit it and 2.5in back. I kinda thought true duals with 3in would be a littler over kill but maybe not with the exhaust weakpoint on vortecs.

Re: Critique This

That cam looks alright, but I would go one 'size' bigger. One characteristic about that cam thats really nice is all the extra duration on the exhaust side - Vortec heads flow great on the intake side, but need some help on the exhaust side. The extra duration on the exhaust lobes will definitely help.

Re: Critique This

Idk that cam is a littler bigger than a comp 268. I'd like to be able to stick with the stock converter.

Now heres the good question. Lots of people are telling me to ditch the expensive roller cam for just a plan hydraulic flat. Then some say that I'd be loosing 30hp from doing so. 30hp from changing from roller to flat on a 350-375 hp motor?

Ronin, if you don't have the block yet, lemme know, because I have exactly what you need. 350, four bolt main block w/1 piece RMS. Universal block (your choice which side you want the dipstick), roller provision post ready, WITH forged crank. Both virgins (block and crank), untouched, and I'll even throw in an engine cradle. I'm right here in Old Bridge, so lemme know if you want, as it won't last long (plenty of pics)....
