TBI to TPI

Well, i may be getting ahold of an 89' RS with an LB9 in it on sunday.. Will be the home for my L98 TPI once i get the car (if i do).

My luck, the LB9's in 89 RS's are TBI.. i was hoping it was TPI so my L98 would slap right in there.. of course not!

Well, obviously i need the engine harness, MAF sensor, and the intake setup (already have it)

But heres what i need to know.. Are the dash harness's the same, or do i need one from a TPI car? Along with the ECU.. are they the same just with a different prom.. or do i need a whole TPI ECM?

Appreciate the help guys,

Congrats on the new purchase, if you get ahold of it, that is....

An LB9 is just that, a 305-TPI. If it were a 305-TBI, it would be designated an LO3. Who is telling you it's an LB9, the seller? Easiest way (aside from lifting the hood) to tell would be by the VIN number. Do you know it yet....?

... so now your sure that it's TBI then? If it's an LB9, it's Tuned Port Injected, and the only thing you'll need to swap over to the L98 is the PROM, and fuel injectors. If it turns out to be an LO3, which is more than likely what it is, you'll need the entire TPI setup, including the fuel pump. Here's a quick list of what you would need for that particular swap, Click Here....

Re: TBI to TPI

Sorry, it is a LO3.

I kno for a fact its TBI.. and i do have the complete TPI setup, im just missing the engine harness and MAF sensor. I'll read your page, im just hoping the TBI dash harness is the same!

Also, the post says i need a TPI ECM.. is it possible to use the same ECM and just swap the prom? Or is it completely different?

John

The dizzy is the same....

What kind of ECM did you come across, and did you buy it yet? If not, look into going with a speed density ECM '7730 (91-92 TPI). Rather than waste money on an engine harness, you could repin the existing harness to accept Tuned Port Injection w/SD. Click the link....;

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...inning+harness

Edit: Actually, you know what, scratch that. If your targeting the '165 MAF ECM, stick w/it then, as things are going very smooth for you, and I don't want to disturb the flow of your build by throwing in alternatives....

Re: TBI to TPI

If you go to www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ you can get a whole 350TPI for i believ its 1200-1600 and it says "Camaro/Firebird 82-92 350 TPI Engine with wiring harness, computer and accessories. We guarantee that these motors will run but we do not guarantee lengths of time due to the fact we do not know how they will be driven.. Mileage varies from 100,000-160,000 miles. Call for availability and shipping quotes" so look into that if you want i know i was going to do that to replace my L03 but i decided to turn it into a 335 Stroker.
