350 to 302 rebuild

Just thought I would share my new rebuild. I've been running a TPI L98 out of '88 GTA (converted to SD) in my '69 Z-28 Camaro Clone. The motor had 173K miles, smoked on startup bad and the oilpump pickup had fallen off causing oil starve under braking so it was time to requild. I had a L99 crank with matching 5.94" rods setting in the shop from a diffrent prodject so I used them and added a ZZ4 cam with 1.6 roller tip rockers. I hope to have it in this weekend and start tuning the new setup. I know down sizing is a little but how many people do you see cruising a TPI 302 in their '69 Camaro?

Jeff

Might be sweet... theres a couple LT1s running around having been destroked from a 5.7 to a 5.0 doing the same thing you did, and 7800-8000 rpm isn't unusual for some of them! That takes some other durability mods too of course... but still pretty wild!

If you dont mind trading power for novelty, then go for it.

Hope you're planning on modifying the TPI hardware. The stock stuff is going to drop off about 1000 RPMs of the cam's powerband.

Novelty over power is definitely the way I'm currently headed but still it should be able to merge with authority! Motors in but I'm bogged down in the details but hopefully I will get in fired in a day or two.

Just a little update. Motors in and running. I like the zz4 cam 1.6R idle sound. All I have had time to tune is the idle but I hope to get some more done this weekend and actually drive it! I will post a link to some exhaust audio just for fun later.

stock tpi is done at like 5500....a real 302 makes its peak at around 7500...i would know...there is a 68 z28 sitting in my garage. what are you doing to mod the injection system?

What a "real" 302 does is irrelevant. What a ZZ4 cam does is relevant.

Stock TPI starts dropping off power at about 4800 RPMs. It might rev higher, but it's wasted powerwise.
