first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
So after searching through threads Ive finaly decided to got with a 454 swap into my car. The car is an 85 that org had a 350tpi and auto. Im going to swap for a 454 carb and TH400. This is going to be a long and slow project beacuse im a full time student and part time job so bear with me. Im getting rid of all ac/heat. I want the engine bay clean as posible and want everything gone before I get the BBC in place. So please help me with my wiring mess.
Question 1:
what to do with wiring? I want to totaly get ride of ac/heat, and the computer. I was told to get rid of every thing coming from the computer, but the harness connects to the other one coming from the driver side....So do I just take off the wire loom and disconect the ones from the computer?
and
there is a plug down by the computer that runs up into the dash board, do I need these wires? they are not part of the computer harness but they are all tied up together?????????
Question 2:
There is a plug thing about one foot away from the computer.....does this come apart? I tried but couldnt get it. Because some wires that I need to keep (from question 1) are ran through it. HELP!!! ME PLEASE!!!
question 3:
There are 4 wires running down the pass side of the car and I need to know what they are so I can get rid of them or keep them.
colors are bule/blue and brown/yellow. I thought they were speaker wires but Im not sure
heres a pic:

I will update with pics as progress is made, thanks for all the help, this site has a TON OF INFO on it.
thanks
kyle

Buy a repair manual and start tracing the schematics. Factory harnesses run back and forth from one side to the other and in and out of the firewall depending on what the wires are used for.
Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
I cut my harness out on the driver side. All I did was repower the two red wires going to the fuse box. That allowed lights, radio, ignition, etc, to work. I found what wire that feeds the starter mine was purple in color. I found my ignition wire that I ran to my coil it was pink in color. And I found the wire that feeds my fuel pump that I wired through a toggle switch it was tan with white stripe. I still have some wires left that I cut think they may be gauges.

If you go to AUTOZONE.COM they do have wiring diagrams in there help section. Also I think its Austonthirdgen.com. Those freen wires are signal wires for your fuelpump and one for your fan. That tan one looks like Oil Pressure. But look it up for sure.
Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
OK thats good to know, that I might still have left over wires from the gauges. Is there a way to wire it so the stock gauges work tho? I would like them to work like factory if possible.
thanks for the hekp

you can hook your gauges up like factory. Just get some sending units and connectors..trace out the wires ect. I put an lsx in my car and the factory gauges work. good luck.

Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
no offense but the project you suggested will be one hell of a first timer with no experience....the first pic is a slave cylinder and the second a cruise servo. personally I would suggest cutting all of the engine bay wiring out and starting from scratch, would be much easier IMO

Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
I think this is going to end up a butchered up project that will get sold to someone else due to lack of experience and basic mechanical knowledge.
You'll probably be better off just having some shop do the swap for you properly providing they would even take it in it's current state.
Um, you stated in the first post that it was originally a 350 TPI (which wasn't available in 85) and an auto yet the car has a clutch slave cylinder??

Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
first: Im not a first timer to cars, just never messed with camaros.
second: Im to poor to pay someone to do work on a car I KNOW I can do just as well
I was told the car was 350tpi auto from the last owner, was also told that he was in process to converting it to 5speed.
I built my last mustang from the ground up with a mild 306, I do all my own work because I want to be able to do everything even if it takes me a while. Im only 20, full time job, and full time student. But I have just never messed with the wiring side of the job, especialy when converting from f.i. to carb.
and I thought that was the slave cylinder but was for sure, so I just wanted to check.
and I had no clue about the cruise thing tho, but thanks for the info, now I know I can get that **** out of my way
and the only wires left in my engine bay are the ones coming from the driver side.
Thanks for the help, but just let this thread die and when I get the project done I will post up final pics of just how much of perfectionist this car will be.
thanks for the help tho, it will really help me, thanks

by the way greezemonkey, I like your car, looks mean as hell

and Im not so sure that it is an 85, come to think of it I never realy lookd at the year on the title, but it is deff TPI, NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT

Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
Well... I have never worked on a manual camaro car can I knew that was a slave cyl. I would just pace yourself don;t get over your head. With the basic mechanical skills you could take on a project like this. So don't rig anything if you don't know. Find someone who does. Most the time don't listen to the guys from parts stores too. They'l stear you wrong inless they prove themselfs.
Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
I have all my wiring diagrams laid out now and things are starting to make more sense. Once I charge my battery back up im going to make sure all the lights work, If they do then im taking all the other wiring out completly. Then when I get the motor rebuilt to my liking and drop it in place I will wire all that....coil, fan, etc.. Then I am going to make a custom cluster using all autometer gauges that way I know all my readings will be acutrate and I can wire all those from scratch a lot easier then messing with factory gauges I think....
Like I said in the very first post this swap is gona be a long way off, and it will be right when im done.
thanks
kyle

Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
Factory gauges arent bad... I know my temps off. Thats it. As far as making all your lights work. There should be a couple of wires that went to your starter(ten gauge) hook those to 12v now you have power to your car ie. Headlamps/brakelamps/interior lights ect. Green wire is temp, Tan wire is oil pressure, thin white wire is tach ect. They all go to the bulkhead connector on the firewall.
Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
awsome, mabey I can keep the factory gauges then. I think I know what wires went to the starter so I next time I work on the car I will hook up 12v and hope for the best.
thanks for the info on the gauges, you just helped me figure out 3 wires I couldnt track behind the dash
thanks

Re: first third gen, first BBC, and LOTS of questions
Thanks for the comment on the car! , I started somewhere too so don`t take it too hard, it`s just a big project and we all can tell by the questions that it is a bit over your head- at this point at least. Gain the trust of the guys around here and they will guide you, hopefully. Good luck the BBC is worth the effort IMO
