Engine swap questions

This is my first post and I have a 91' Firebird with a 3.1 and am thinking about swapping it for a 77' stock 350 what kind of issues will I have with trying to do this swap? I have read the V6 to V8 Swap - READ BEFORE POSTING NEW! but it doesn't say anything about using an older motor just that you should get one from the same year or newer... and I'm much better equipped to work on carbureted engines since I understand nothing about MPFI...

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

First understand that no carb'd engine is emissions legal in any of the 50 United States in a '91 f-body. Doesn't matter where you live, whether they inspect or test, it isn't legal to drive it on public streets, roads, or by-ways.

Having said that, the intent of the statement in the sticky about same year or newer had to do with ease of parts transfer from donor car to receptor car. That doesn't mean you can't physically put an older engine in and get it to run.

How old of an engine are you talking about?

Carburetors came on some things through 1988. f-bodies got them through '87.

Not that it makes a lot of difference what came on it. You can build it with most anything.

Re: Engine swap questions

Checked with local inspection and they said that it was illegal but that they didn't check underneath the hood on any inspection the biggest thing that they care about now is that I have mufflers and a catalytic converter, but what kind of issues will I have doing this swap?

The primary issues you'll have involve the 3rd gen specific parts you'll need that won't be on a '77 engine. Pretty much documented in the sticky.

Re: Engine swap questions

FYI, I contemplated the same swap and found to make it work I needed headers (to clear dip stick on DR side) After pricing headers, Y pipe, and aggravation factors of emissions, I could purchase a later model 350 cheaper and reuse a lot off old motor. A V6 does not have parts to swap, but they can be found in junk yards reasonably priced.

Re: Engine swap questions

Already started on rebuilding the engine so it would be kinda pointless to get a newer 350 now but I do really appreciate that information should probably start looking for headers...
