305 to 350
probly done tons of times but the search didnt bring up topics this not fuel injected question. 85 camaro 305, quad carb 4 bbl. got a 350 carb engine and rear disc brakes out of a firebird. im about to toss the engine in. will my factory exaust, smog pumps, all stock everything just bolt up and go? will the computer flip on the timing, or other problems? and i have a t-5 borg that ill be bolting up to it all ready in the car. will the flywheel bolt up to the 350? any forseable preventions i should worrie about? things i need to buy?
I'd rather not need to stop half way through to wate for a part to get to town. I have another car but the snows about to melt and my maro will be the daily driver again.
cold in alaska.

Re: 305 to 350
What year is the firebird 350? It may make a difference in the less obvious like flywheel. Is it a 1 or 2 piece rear main seal? Also the exhaust may be slightly different. My 83 Z went from 305 to 90 350. The factory Y pipe from 305 was 1 inch too short to reach manifolds. I had to cut and weld to make it work.

Not sure i can go check in the next couple of days. the engines still in it so i wont know on the seals till i get it out. other than the flywheel any computer troubles or knock sensor type problems? its got off road headers/ y pipe on it and underneath its the same exhaust as on my car. figured it should bolt in and go. another thing. if i go with the headers on the engine will taking the smog stuff out affect the computer?

Re: 305 to 350
Its not stock by the looks of it, it could have been a different engine or was rebuilt. only thing makeing me think that is because its painted bright orange so it was pulled at one time. so a 350 from a firebird will have what? different engine mounts or bellhouse bolting location? There's aftermarket headers and intake manifold. it also had a edelbrock carb on it. turbo 400 tanny. I thought the pontiac and camaro had the same body/drivetrain and the only difference was suspension, front facia, and interrior/guages? as soon as the snow melts i would be pulling it. unless it wont work.. i thought a gm 350 was a gm 350? other than the year for one or two peice rear. the distributor is in the same location. looks pritty small block chevy to me. if any of this is wrong correct me. i dislike have faulty information in my head.

--If the year on the new motor is close to the old one concerning the heads then your exhaust might just bolt up.
--Smog pump bolt up will depend on the accessory bracket holes locations on the new motor.
--Computer problems are possible if youre not using the carb that matches the computer in the car. My suggestion is to drop the computer and tune the better of the 2 carbs yourself.
--Flywheel, call your auto parts store to see if they offer more than one flywheel between 305 and 350 for tooth count, weight, diameter and other dimensions. If the years on the block castings are different, definitely check the parts store.
--Fuel supply, spark supply, radiator, fans, and a different vibration damper are also things you might have to consider as possible issues. GL

Re: 305 to 350
yea theres a shop in town thats supposed to do good work on quadrajets so ill get it rebuilt and put it on the 350. otherwise id half to replace the distibuter and get a new ignition system right? and before i do this i should get a new transmission? i think factory my car only came with 190hp and a t-5. so a t-5 world class should just bolt in with the same crossmember and bellhouse? im not sure what the cfm on the stock quadrajet is and if i had them switch out the parts should i go for an upgrade to 600cfm for a 350? im guessing its probly at 500cfm havnt done the reasearch...
