Ok my engine is knocking and it is the bottom end. I found goodwrench 350 bored 60 over for 200 bucks near by. It comes with some 194 heads and cast iron intake. I plan on swapping my l98 aluminum heads, performer intake, and carb over to it. Also, my camaro has had a 350 swap in it from the previous owner. I need to know if everything I have will swap over just fine. I have the t-5 tranny that I will but in new flywheel/clutch. There is no ac so I just need to make sure the other brackets and pulleys swap. My alt. is on the pass. side. I know the rear seals changed but didn't know if that made a difference. Thanks

 

Everything will swap over, just get a new flywheel since the 71' block uses a 2-pc rear main (make sure to get the right tooth count for your starter or get a new starter with the flywheel if you want). Also you might want to check out the pistons in the new block, make sure they aren't domed/dished or anything like that were you would have crazy high/low compression.

 

If you are just using the short block I dont see any prob

 

Cool. I will have to ask about that. I think it is a great deal if it is true. Only thing is I need a rust free body and a rear end too lol. Prb get one out of a 4th gen sometime.

 

lol well can't help ya with a rust free body (well I could if you were in California lol) but the rear shouldn't be a big deal.

 

Make sure the block has the starter mount bolt holes that you need. Many of those older block didn't. The flywheel you need will be for the '83-'85 f-body T5 application.

 

I'm pretty sure if it's a real 71' block that it should have the starter mounts, my 69' block does. If not you can either get a new starter, or buy an adapter. You could even change the nose piece if need be. I know they used bellhousing mount starters on the Chevy trucks up till about 72', but the blocks still had the holes in them for the starter. I think they started castiing the starter holes in the mid 60's. I did this on my 67' K10 when I swapped a block mounted mini starter onto it. You should be able to use an aftermarket flywheel as well or one of the correct diameter for your application for a 2pc seal block, if you can't source the 83-85 f-body version.

 

You are completely missing the point. Yes, it will have starter mount holes in the block. But, it may not have the correct holes for the starter you have to use with a T5.

And, the holes aren't "cast". They are drilled and tapped.

The only thing you can use is a 153-tooth flywheel. It doesn't have to be GM to be a replacement for the '83-'85 f-body V8 T5 application.

 

I think I said earlier he needed the correct tooth count? I was just trying to simplify it as some people will go out and look for an 83-85 f-body flywheel when they read that instead of just getting a correct tooth count 2-pc flywheel. Pardon me for using the wrong verbage on "cast" but same overall effect, comes from the factory. Some holes were offset, some weren't, but a 71' 350 should have the same starter mounting holes.

 

I'm guessing it won't, as another member found out with his 70's block recently. That's why I brought it up.

 

Good to know. We all have different experiences so that's what these boards are great for I "personally" haven't ran into this issue but that's not saying it could never ever happen. Just hasn't happened to me lol. I'm also assuming when he said a goodwrench 350 that it's probably not an original engine anyways, might just be in a 71'.
