The V-6 transmission will not bolt to a V-8.

What I said applies to automatic transmissions. If you're talking about a manual, then what you said is true. However, from what I've heard, you still don't want to use a V-6 manual tranny on a V-8 because of gearing and strength.

Save some money for a new tranny. Just because it may bolt up doesn't mean it will hold up. Many people on this board have found that T5's don't like big torque motors--that's one main reason many switch to a T56.

Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
The input shaft of the V6 tranny is different than those on the V8 models. The V6 has a 15/16" shaft with 14 splines vs. 1 1/8" and 26 splines. You may be able to get a V8 shaft from a transmission shop, but you will need to remove the existing input shaft, and count the number of teeth on the transfer gear, and get one with the exact same number of teeth, but with the V8 spline count...they may not be available.
The cases themselves have the same mounting pattern to the bellhousing....just the internal gears and shafts are different.
All said, I would definitely recommend starting with at least a V8 tranny, or save yourself the time and swap in a T56 right now.
