Is it possible to swap engine and tranny for under $5k?

Here's the deal. I need a reliable car and my Formula isn't doing too well. So my options are simple: Get financing from the bank and get a new car, put the Bird on blocks until I can get around to fixing it, or try to do an engine and tranny swap for under $5000. I wanted to get a Tremac transmission, so there goes half the $5000 right there (+/-). Is it possible to get a decent (new/like new) 350 with a warranty for the remaining money? Or should I just breakdown and get some POS ***** until I've got more cash to fix the Bird up right? BTW, the Formula could also use a new exhaust, but I don't think there's any money left for that. Anyone have any suggestions?

sure you can get a new short block, or even a complete engine with your other half of the 5000, but you ought to remember there is always little out of pocket expenses that pop up doing this sort of thing. if you spend 1000 on parts figure on another 100 or so on sealer, oil, bolts and all the other little things that make it all work.
