can anyone recommend a cam for my 461?

im building a 454 .030 over right now...

i currently have a lunati street master cam with 295* and .550 and 108* lobe separation...

this car is gonna almost be a daily driver, i currently have a 91 rs but i can almost guarantee that when i finish putting the 461 in the 83z that i will sell the rs... dont have the space or need for two cars...

but the lunati cam that i have right now is probably too much cam... so im looking for another one...

ive got my eyes on a cran cams powermax... its the 286* .533/.544 lift... crane says this one has a fair idle, and the rpm range is 2000-5500... which will better suit my edelbrock perfomer intake... the lunati has a 3500-6500 rpm range...

Get a Comp 280. I've built several big blocks with that cam, it pulls great, idles fairly smooth, and generally puts a big grin on the owner's face.

Either get that one, or their XE274H which has about the same intake duration but a better exhaust lobe. I've never built a big block with that cam but it runs great in a smal block 400.

Get rid of the stock rocker arm crap whatever you do, you're losing at least .030" of lift right there. I have the Comp cast steel roller-tip ones in my 454.

I just put the powermax 286H in my 454. I think the specs are 224/234 duration and 534/553 lift. The powerband is from 2500-6500. It actually suprised me with the idle. It wasn't as choppy as I had expected. I haven't realy driven it yet, but I do you know when I crack the throttle, the engine doesn't just torque over, the whole frt. end of the car lifts. Before I set the idle/timing/ carb, I dropped it in gear to move it around the garage and I almost put myself through the wall. Can we say torque!!!
I Don't know about your car, but I've got 4.10's, a gutted interior, and a few other reduction items. It is a street car, so as far as I can tell, I'm in for one hell of a ride. I highly recommend this cam grind. If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me.

I just installed a XE294 in my race engine. It idles very smooth at 1200 rpm.

Picking a cam will depend on a few things. The Performer intake is limited. You didn't say how much stall the converter has, compression ratio or rear end gearing. These will all determine the best cam choice.

I'd take a guess and say the CompCams XE274 would be your best choice. Maybe drop down to the XE268 if you don't have headers or a higher stall converter.

I'm running a 302/306 in my 402. I have no vacum to speak of at idle and I have a solinoid to kick up the idle when it's cold. I've used as big as 312/322 on the street and had alot of comments from the "you can't do that!" crowd.

I've put in a vacum can, the fast idle solinoid, and adjustable vacum advance. I'm going to be running the performer rpm airgap and 10.2:1 comp ratio when it's all finished. You can run your 286 cam and be fine, might make for a lousy daily driver and you'll need to change intakes but in a 461 not all that much will keep up on the weekends.

I ran a solid lifter cam instead of a hydraulic because you can get more lift for a given duration (specs are on my page, but it's ~.561 lift and 236° at .050). BBC's like more lift than duration. I also run Crane gold roller rockers and 7/16 pushrods. It's a great street setup as long as you don't mind adjusting valves every few months.

i think im gonna go with the 286*... ill still have the lunati 295* if i decide to go higher...

i have no idea what the compression ratio is... i bought it from a friend, who bought it from a guy... and my friend didnt even bother to ask for the details... he doesnt even know what size cam it has already... and he thought it was a truck block, which it is not...

the engine has a pretty fresh rebuild... stock it had a 7.9to1 cr... but since it was overbored, i have no idea what cr the new pistons yield...

im pretty much assuming the heads have 118cc chambers... this wasnt exactly a stock - hi/perf engine... stock it had i think 210-220 horses... its an 81' block... 2 bolt mains...

i have a tci street fighter torque converter that summit says will have a stall speed between 3000 - 3500...

i know ill have to go with a better intake eventually... i got the performer for $50 from a neighbor...

and i will be running headers... when i get the short block back together...

and, this may not become a daily driver. last night my dad was asking me if id trade my 91 rs for his 92 rs 25th anni t-top 305... he wants to get another truck and knows that i like his 92... he said he doesnt want the dealership to screw him on a trade in on the 92' cause its in pretty good shape, but doesnt care if he gets screwed over too bad on my 91' v6...

so im pretty sure im gonna have a new daily driver... im just gonna have to pay to have both titles changed, cause mine is in my name...

thanks for the advice... yall guys are really helping me out a lot...
