The nightmare contunes 85z 305 to 350

ok to make a long story short here goes. 85z28 carb (305), had rod knocking when i bought it($200) good deal so i couldnt pass up. Got a 350 short block off 84 vette and a set of mid 70's 882 heads. Eldebrock Performer Intake Stock Q-jet off my 74Vette. Can i use the stock distributer that was with the 305? was computer controlled had wires running into the carb not sure how to go around this setup. do i need a lockup kit for the 700r4 since i am bypassing the computer controlled carb? not looking for performance just reliable dialy driver always loved thridgens but im old and stuck in my ways and like em simple without computer intervention. is their anything else i need to keep in mind when doing this? or should i just hook back up the factory qjet. the factory manifolds will not fit on these heads so no O2 ect.. which is fine by me....

If you can't use an O2 sensor, you can't reuse the CC carb or distributor. You really should try and use the CC carb and distributor if the car is a DD. If you don't use the stock carb and distributor, the lockup will no work unless you do something like this:

... or buy a lockup kit.

Why? Those are about the worst possible heads out there. Your 305 heads would be worlds better.

Why are you taking off the best street performance carb out there? Keep the q-jet and keep it fully functional. If you keep the 305 heads, your manifolds will fit it (although they'll be restrictive). What manifolds were you planning on using?

The simplest combination, without doubt, is the computer controlled q-jet. Hands down.

i have the 882 heads cause local machine shop had them freshly built and ready for $250 this is a DD and im running out of money fast he told me(guy at machine shop) it would take alot more $$$ to rebuild the old 305 heads (they have well over 300k miles on them) i have decided to stick with stock qjet/distributor/ect.. for ease of use i just dont know the correct manifolds i will need to bolt to these heads and my factory Y pipe.

I'd rather spend $500 on the 305 heads than $250 on a set of 882's.

What did he think the 305 heads needed that would cost more than $250? Most likely they'd benefit from new valve springs and valve stem seals, but a simple disassembly, cleaning, seat clean-up, seals, and new springs shouldn't cost much more than $250, if anything. Look at it this way - with the 305 heads, you don't have to spend anything else on the exhaust (to at least get it running). Buy cheap headers and get the stock exhaust grafted to them, and you're looking at spending at least $300, probably more. So, you should be able to spend $550 on the 305 heads and break even.

Not to mention that even with the stock 1.84" intake valves, the 305 heads are superior to 882's.

I am not aware of any factory manifolds that will fit 882 heads in a 3rd gen chassis. It's either cheap headers (which never end up being cheap), or 305/L98 heads.

Of course, factory LG4 exhaust manifolds are going to be restrictive. They restrict a 305, let alone a 350.

IMHO, you're getting caught up in the penny-wise/pound-foolish trap. Stick with the 305 heads, stick with the CC carb, and you'll at least have something you can drive for the least amount of money that will still be upgradeable later. 882 heads just take you down the wrong path at every turn.

Your stock heads should be 416's, and with some porting (even with stock valves) they can flow over 22X cfm. Stock they flow 19X cfm. Use those, they'll be easier to install than the 882's, and they flow better. If you rebuild the heads yourself, it won't cost the $250 that the 882 heads will cost you.

About the best you can do with the 882's and stock manifolds is just use 5 bolts on the passenger side. Not ideal, obviously, especially if you have to use gaskets to get them to seal.

There is probably somebody in your area that would give you a set of 305 heads. Can't hurt to ask on your regional forum.
