383 Cam Selection?

So the more I look around the more confused I seem to get...I am looking to get a 383 blueprinted block from summit:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MLL-BP3830/

Then was potentially thinking this cam since I already have edelbrock heads and will go with one of their carbs.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-2201/

Anyone running a similiar setup? Trying to avoid any grinding etc for clearance issues which I am hearing are sometimes an issue and sometimes not. I see the small base circle cams are sold individually on summit but they also have rpm ranges they are roughly 3800-7500 and am looking for a range from 1500-6000 or so. Also as a side note Edelbrock of course covered their *** by saying they were unsure on clearance issues.

Re: 383 Cam Selection?

i thinks its the #2 rod that interferes with the cam lobe. then if you grind it your balance will be off. thats why i build my own custom engines. one thing you can do is get a stock roller cam and see if a cam shop can grind it. they can also recommend the best grind for your application. we have "reed cams" here in stockbridge GA, last time i priced a regrind it was $150

Re: 383 Cam Selection?

What edelbrock heads you have? that performer rpm is a nasty cam for a 383, should run very hard but only if you have good compression and good flowing heads with intake to match

Comp cams can make their cams on small base circles without extra cost i believe. you can order something similar, they got a few 230/236 grinds, and a few 236/242 grinds but the bigger type cams will want to rev over 6200 rpm for sure. Not sure how high you want to go or how hight that motor can take

Re: 383 Cam Selection?

RocZ, I've got these heads http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ED...9/?image=large 64cc. The block manufacturer was approximating about a 10.3 compression with that size...should be good as my weekend summer driver =) Thought about going with the domed pistons but still want to fill up at the pump. I guess i'll contact some of the cam manufacturers and see if they'll grind it or have something which will be a good fit.

Re: 383 Cam Selection?

you will be fine on pump with 10.3 to 1. THose heads are decent heads, i'd just change the valve springs to a good double spring for hydraulic rollers and call it a day. I think the comp cams 282HR is a good grind for that setup. That cam is capable of 380+whp on the right setup. I think it should clear the stroker rods but wont know for sure til you fit it.

Re: 383 Cam Selection?

i just installed the comp cams xr280r into my 383 today. before i put the gear drive on, i rotated the cam to see if it would hit the connecting rods, and it did. but once i got the timing correctly and the cam and crank were in sync, everything cleared without any problems. you shouldnt have any problems, i have alot of room in my setup.

Re: 383 Cam Selection?

i have that edelbrock cam in my 383, was exactly the duration and lift i wanted.....but, it did hit one of my rods. i advanced the cam 6*(iirc) and that fixed the problem, but it altered the timing events.

don't get it. like someone else said, comp cams will grind any one of their cams on a small base circle for an extra $10 bucks iirc. if you are set on that one, pick a similar one from comp cams and have them put it on a small base circle.

Re: 383 Cam Selection?

i used a comp extreme energy cam. .490/.490 lift. works great. didnt have an issue with clearence either. have an eagle 383 rotatins assembly. cleared for stroker rods might be a difference too but i think thats mostly just for the bottom of the cylinder

comp cams actually said they would grind one for me at no extra charge. might be worth the wait if you're concerned about clearance issues. my .570/.576 cam clears everything no problem.
