305 to 2.8

My 305 is currently on it's last leg, and I have a perfectly fine 2.8 with everything in my parts car. So instead of buying a 350, I am going to put the 2.8 in. How much am I going to need from the part car in terms of the computer and the harness? I know how to change a motor of the same number of pistons, but what differences will there be in this change? Thanks alot for the help.
Oh yeah, I know half of you are going to tell me to get a 350, but I don't want one, because I already have the 2.8 with tranny and all, and that is some serious $ I don't have to spend

sell that 2.8 to someone that has blown theirs(I know there must be plenty) and put in a basic GM Goodwrench 350. That way you have tons of reusable parts and no messing with rewiring your car.

I'd have to echo that recommendation. Having gone the other way, I know it is a lot of work, and wouldn't be any less work going the direction you suggest. The benefits would be much less to boot.

You'd be better off driving your parts car.

Well, I wish I could drive my part car, becaue that was my first camaro. Then my sister wrecked it, so it is kinda outta commission, unless I wanna get a new body, frame, etc! But, the thing is, I have a 2.8, and I don't wanna go through the trouble of selling it and getting a 350. I am just 17, and am only making 7 an hour, so money is a big deal, and I'd like to make do with what I have.

The other guys have offered the best advice. You will spend LOTS of time. You will need to swap engine wiring harness and computer then swap engine and transmission from donor car to decrease the value of your car $1000. Gm made alot of 2.8L vehicles. Your 2.8L with trans would be worth a good $500 to $600 bucks if it runs ok. That will buy you a 350 shortblock anyway. Long block would be MUCH better but you say your on a tight budget.

Just wondering but, I'm not sure if Berlinetas cam with tachs but if it did you would have to replace it with a V6 type. The guys are right about getting a V8, and I presently have a Camaro 2.8 which I'm swapping to a 3.4. Your going to be disapointed in the lack of power the 2.8 puts out.

You can sell your parts and find an engine at places like :

Ok, you guys have talked me into getting a new v-8. Now the question is, which one? I picked up a local classifie paper, and found several for sale within my budget. Which of the following will go the smoothest with my current 84 lg4 with a th700r4?
'82 350
'82 305
'88 350
'77 350?

and then there are a couple of just plain 350's one of which is complete, and has 4 bolt mains. I know that this is better, but what makes 4 bolt's better?
Thanks alot guys.

Easiest would be an 86 or older engine so you don't have to deal with bolt holes not lining up on some of your accessories.

Another option is to go to your nearest 'hole in the wall' auto machine shop and tell them your woes. Maybe rebuildin' the 305 or they may have a 350 around will cost less than you think (If they're slow)

Except no older than '79 (I think) - driver's side dipstick.

the difference between drivers and passenger side dipstick is the driver-side dipstick doesn't fit well around the exhaust manifold. if you ran headers, it might work ok, im guessing.

Man,
You should go take the intake manifold off of that car and pour some sand in there.... then start that bad boy up! In about a week go out there to try and start that piece of **** and it will run horribly (if it does) and then show your mom... time for 350 if you ask me
