305 TBI to 350 TPI

i have no experience with engines, im bringing an L98 to a mechanic shop, but i want to buy all the parts i need so that he doesn't back stab me. So its a completly stock 91 camaro 305 tbi 2.73. what i know by these fourms is that i need a new/used wiring harness and a new/used computer.i don't know what else seeing how many ppl mod there 350's in these fourms instead of a straight stock swap. Like can i swap the alternator and all the front accessories of the 305 to the 350? do i need to change my fuel pump? any hoses need to be replaced or lengthend? (P.S l98 has spark plugs, pistons, crankshaft, basically all metal componets except a tpi intake system). Basically a grocery list of parts for a stock 350TPI swap would be VERY HELPFUL

What happened to the stock 305 engine? Anything wrong with it? What are you going to do with it?

Yes. It would be best to buy new coolant hoses. Vacuum hoses should come from the same vehicle that gives up the TPI.

Re: 305 TBI to 350 TPI

You will need a complete engine wiring harness and ECM for a TPI 350. I reccomend a painless wire harness. They are expensive but they are worth the savings in trouble TRUST ME I've done this conversion three times. Find out what year camaro/firebird ECM you are going to use and go from there.

You will also need the 350 fuel injectors. They are specific to the year of the TPI system (86-89= 20 pph/ 90-92=22 pph) I would buy new ones. If you get an ecm and harness from a 86-89 car you will need a mass airflow sensor (MAF), If you get an ecm and harness from 90-92 car you will not.
You will also need the proper knock sensor. They are specific to year, engine, and EFI system.

If your intake and plenum are 86-89 it will have a 9th fuel injector for cold starts. Its not an issue to use a 90-92 ECM and harness on a 86-89 intake setup, as you don't need it. They just made the 8 primary injectors fire more when its cold. But if you want to run a 86-89 ECM harness on a 90-92 intake setup there is no 9th injector nor provisions to install one. The car will run rough and will be hard to start.

You can re use your TBI electronic advance distributor.

You will need a full chassis wiring diagram for the TPI car and the TBI car. Your speedometer will need to be rewired. The TBI cars had a buffer box inbetween the VSS sensor and the ECM. The TPI cars did this internally in the ECM.

Thats all I can remember right now.

Re: 305 TBI to 350 TPI

Or you can just use the TBI on the 350.

Re: 305 TBI to 350 TPI

To reuse the TBI on the 350 all you will need is a custom chip and 350 fuel injectors.

A lot easier. If you are looking to make high rpm torque I would retain the TBI. If you want low rpm torque and a little better gas milieage I would go with the tuned port setup. It requires a lot of work and money to make a TPI make good horsepower. And you can always do better with a TBI setup and the same ammount of work/money. It is designed specifically so you don't make alot of high rpm torque.
