This is a little long...
I just performed the following engine swap on my 87 Formula, 5 speed because the 305 LB9 TPI, 125K overheated. Swap performed by a trusted auto shop.
Added:
GM #12513151 Caprice 350 - Pace - $1490.40
GM #12551705 LT1 camshaft - Pace - $195.14
SLP #21000 Cold Induction - SLP - $199.95
Transferred from 305:
TPI,intake manifold,PROM,fuel pressure regulator and injectors, belts, pulleys etc.
Problem parts replaced by me:
starter, battery, tempature sensor guage, alarm system
Fixed Problems:
runs poorly - timing set wrong
idle sticks - added new spring
Current Problems:
idle a little rough with surging
(my 305 did the same thing)
Peformance:
Runs great! Much Much stronger than 305.
Significantly stronger 1000-3500rpm
A little lame above 4000rpm. No flat spots.
Computer& Emissions:
No codes.
Will test for Ohio next week.
Recomendations:
How an auto shop can swap a motor but not
set the timing correctly? 14 deg off?
**I would do the motor swap myself.**
I have two cars. My 95 GMC Jimmy, is great in the snow, good for people i.e 4 doors, mush ride and leather, but I drive my Firebird every day to work. Nothing beats a V8, 5speed and handling.
**I would recommend this engine**
Future changes:
New Heads? I've heard nothing but bad things
about these heads. Can they really be that
bad? Right now I need new Tires.

I guess you kept your T-5 in? You think it will hold up? What would you guess the horsepower and torque on that motor is since you've had a chance to run it. I have heard horsepower #'s from 210-280 out of the crate depending on who I talked to.

Stock L05 put out 210hp. So the LT1 cam should put it near the 240hp range since L05 have the peanut cam. Exhaust put you to 260hp which isn't bad for a new $1500 engine not a rebuilt one with ??? reliability.

The heads are the only real drawback with that caprice 350. Well, the cam isn't the greatest either. Been there, done that. If your happy with the perfomance as-is, wait untill you swap the heads out

If you are going to change the heads and cam then the GM L98 350 shortblock would be better. http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=514&pid=620
$1135 for a NEW gm 350 shortblock would be great to plant some good heads and cam on.

So did LB97FORMULA pass emissions? And are there any engine sellers that will install parts in the engine before they ship it? I know people like recon will, but all I hear from you guys are horror stories about remans.
I am going to make somebody's day here. You probably haven't seen this....

SD has L05 crate motors with mods! I just ordered the one with the aluminum Edelbrock heads last week. I also had them swap to a different cam. Unfortunately, some of the parts they use are backordered so I don't know when I'll get it.

Thats the LO5 Short block? I looked at it, but since it didnt have any good data on the page, I just thought it was a ripoff.

Good *** , I hope those LT5 motors were putting out a lot more than 210 horsepower!

Weren't those the DOHC 32V Corvette motors that were putting out 405 horsepower? Hehe, don't think I'm stupid or anything, I'm just messin with you.

I realize it was a typo.....I hope.

The tech at SD told me the LO5 would put out 185hp. I'm hoping thats with carb or TBI. If its that low with TPI its worthless.
the truck TBI version of the LO5 was 210HP I believe.

The 5 speed works great. I put in a new clutch this past winter. The new engine is night and day stronger than the 305. Consequently, I have a serious traction problem, which may lead to an upgrade of some drivetrain components.
This leads to the question everybody wants to know. How much horsepower does the L05 make? Its definitely stronger than the orginal LB9, L98 etc. My next purchase will be G-TECH performance meter. This way I can check some performance figures without going to the track. My emissions test will be some time the next couple days. Hope it passes.
P.S. Jim Pace warehouse told me the engine should make about 275 horsepower with the TPI induction. Thats probably just as crediable as the 185 from SDPC.

The engine I ordered in the link above, will put out in the 275 hp range according to SDPC, I had them swap in a hotter cam and add G.M 1.6 roller rockers. I am expecting about 300hp net. I would guess the stock L05 is good for 230hp, which is what it was rated in the 91-93 Caprice it came in. Truck output was rated lower at 210hp.

This engine from SDPC sounds great. It wasn't posted when I first checked this site. From the specs posted, I think this should be the best crate engine replacement for 5.0.
My L05 passed Ohio Emissions with the LT1 cam. I am sure the similar SDPC engines will pass.
Good Luck!
