First off, Moderator: Please don't shut this down, I don't have anywhere else to post this and I need help. Maybe you could even help me out.
Ok, there is this guy close to my town who is on house arrest. While I was on a trip to a junk yard I saw this 84 firebird sitting under his tree with grass growing all over it. I stopped and I looked at the car because It had the parts I was going to try and find at the junk yard in mint condition (the lower grill inserts) I wanted to see if he could sell me those. Turns out to my total surprise It has t tops and the interior has no rips but smells really bad. The body is in primer. The hood is really messed up and it needs a new door. The engine is a 85 Z28 Engine with a .512 lift cam (tell me about it?!!?) Accel Distributor a racing starter and Rochester 600 CFM carb, Weiand Intake chrome valve covers and Some fancy edelbrock air filter also has a v8 new radiator. The tranny is a 700R4 that is busted (he said because the engine was too powerful). It has really huge wheels in the back. Probably 15X15. Don't know how to measure tires though. It also has all new suspension with Polyurathane bushings. He told me it Sat for 4 years while he was in Jail. He said I could have it for $600.00. I thought that was a great deal considering all that was included until he told me It spun a bearing and DIDN'T HAVE A TITLE!! He told me that since 94' he stopped making payments and the bank never came to pick it up. I though ok whatever?!!? What do you guys think? Should I buy it? What I planned to do was totally strip the body and pull the engine interior, sell all the extra parts on ebay and totally use it as a parts car. Then like somehow get rid of the body. Just wanted to know what you guys thought about all this. I also have an 84 pontiac firebird so this was kind of a cool thing to find. Also, I really want this car. Thanks for your guys' help. I was thinking and with a car that has a spun bearing, bad tranny and NO Freakin Title, it's only worth about 400.00.

With it having no title you're taking the risk of it being a stolen vehicle which is something you don't want to get involved with..And also if you buy the car and he does have the title and just doesn't give it to you he can legally take the car back and not have to give you your money back. But for $600 you may just want to go for it and then junk the car..But I'd be careful either way.

First off get the vin# and tag# if it has one, go to the police station.Tell them you want to buy the car but the guy doesn't have a title and you want to make sure it isn't stolen. If that checks out, have him write out a bill of sell to you signed by you,him and 2 witnesses....

It's easy to get rid of the body after you strip the car. One of the local scrap metal yards wants to see a title if you bring in the whole body. I cut up an entire car after cutting the body off the floor for an old car (1951) project I did years ago. I cut up the pieces so that I could take it down in the back of a pickup truck. Never once did they ask for a title since it was all in pieces.

A sawsall does a good job of cutting up a car if you don't have torches.

I agree with the bill of sale and witnesses. One of the witnesses should be a professional. Doctor, mechanic, police officer etc, just because of the situation.

A title search could tell you if the bank still owns it. You might be able to buy it from them. The guy couldn't do a thing if you buy it from the bank since he forefeited on the loan and isn't the owner.

LOL! Now that's an idea! Buy it from the bank for pennies and the guy won't even see any of the money! I love it!

I must agree I like the bank idea. You could make out like a bandit on that deal and be totally legal. When I scrapped my parts car body. I just called around to some scrap yards and one came and picked it up on a roll back. This body had no rear or any drive train in it. They picked it up for free.

Be careful as if you go to the bank drooling over it, they may just figure it out and take the car and sell it at auction... show the bank the worst possible picture of it you can get, that'll help...

Remember, you're going in there and telling them you saw something that they own that they have the right to...

I appriciate all your guys help. I love that bank Idea and the worst possible pictures post. I love it! The car sat for 4 years so do you think the back even has a record of it?

I too think that going to the bank is a good idea BUT remember the guy did just get out of jail, If you got the car off the bank & he later saw you around town It could be trouble. No?

My parts car is of tho the scrap yard tomorrow, I have no paperwork either, hopefully I have no problems

You can't do things legally and be concerned about what a potential criminal might do in return. That would be exactly what that mindset would prefer how you think. Either do it right or don't do it at all. The point is that the guy doesn't deserve a bit of money for that car. Plain and simple. Although, my solution would be to not do it at all. Just no point in having dealings with questionable people. Another deal will pop up if you give it time.

Yes, that was my main concern. I'll be gone in another state next year for college so. . .Plus, if I can get a car with a title for practiacally nothing and doing it legallily, I'm going to do it. You're right, the guy doesn't deserve a penny of it. Each Time I drive by there I just look at that car and say, It shouldn't be just sitting there like that. I'm going to go for it and see what happens. Going to get the VIN right now and going to the Police.

Here is a deal for you. Buy the car from the guy. Just cause he's been to jail dont mean he is a bad guy. If it dont have a title, put it where it cant be seen and on blocks while you work on it. I race a dirt car, so I have done the no title thing before. Got 2 deals in the works now (79 Camaro and 69 Chevelle)for body parts only. The car is probably not stolen, he just wants whatever he can get to feed a drug problem or alcohol problem, or any other problem. If I was closer to IN, I would buy the body off ya after you get what you want, because I need a skin for one of my dirt cars. Its an 81 Camaro now, but I want a 3rd gen body on it. In case anyone is wondering 9 cars out of 10 that are on blocks, are owned by the bank. Its a little secret us hicks know. hehe. Hope I have helped you out.
