alternator wiring

ok i swapped engines in my camaro and the alternator i have now is different than the one i used to have. there is only a red and a white wire comming out of my new alternator, but the hookup from the car itself has a red yellow and black wire. anybody know what i can do to hook this up

I assume you have a 10SI alternator. A large red wire and a plug with 2 smaller wires. Small red is power. The other wire (usually brown) is the field wire.

If you have a newer style alternater with a weatherproof plug then you'll have to check to see what the wires do. One should be marked with an F. That's the field wire required for charging. I don't know what the other wires on the plug are for. I've seen plugs with up to 4 wires on them.

You could just plug it in and see what it does but it may blow the alternator and the newer ones are not rebuildable without unsoldering a bunch of stuff to disassemble the alternator.

lol thats the thing though i cant just plug it in and see what happens.

ive got a plug in on my alt thats got 2 wires on it. red and white.

and the hookup from the car has got a connector with 3 wires on it. big red, smaller yellow and small black or brown im not sure.

the 2 connectors wont connect they werent made for each other. so ive gotta rewire them together myself but i dunno what goes where and im afraid of screwing things up.
