Can i swap a ZZ4 crate engine into my 89 RS?

Hello,

I have an '89 RS Camaro and I was wondering if it is possible to drop a 350 ZZ4 crate engine in there without any major adjustments. Also, what other modifications would i have to do to the rest of the car.(trans, cat , headers, mufflers, gears???)

Happy Holidays,

Should be a fairly simple swap. Just about everything should bolt right back up to the new motor(ie, exhaust, tranny). There a few small things you need to decide upon, like keeping it injected or going carb.Carb will require a different distributer. Also,if you want to keep the electric pump or get a mechanical. I kept my electric fuel pump and added a Mallory regulator that would handle the high pressure from the pump.

The ZZ4 heads don't have the exhaust crossover passage that feeds the EGR valve. You'll need to plumb from the manifold/headers to the intake to retain that function. You decide if that is a "major" modification.

The trans will be okay with the standard upgrades, but you might consider a higher stalling converter so the cam can start right to work. Exhaust depends upon what you've done so far - if nothing, do it all. Gears are a matter of what you plan to do with it when you get done. If you don't have them yet, subframe connectors are a good idea.

The only sensors I pulled out were for the fuel injection and est,(tps,iac,cts,o2,esc module, etc).I left the computer in and most of the harness.

I switched over to carb. The computer is still in my car though so I can lock up the converter when cruising down the highway.

It is a 350.The lock up converter is like a clutch to where the engine and tranny are turning at the same speed. You should have one in yours if you have a 700r4 tranny. As far as the tranny itself,I only added a Vette servo and higher stall converter. The transmission is still pretty new,but later I will have to add better internals.I am installimg a posi rear with 3.23 gears this weekend.I just put the motor in about a month ago.My brother has an 89 RS and we are building a 383 for it.Should be in by late winter/early spring.

The cheapest place to get a ZZ4 is you local chevy dealer because of the cost of shipping even if the price is a bit higher you will almost always do better localy.

NO WAY!!!!!!!!

that is DEFINITELY not true!

it cost me a hundred bucks yo get my engine shipped to me.

i paid 2000 bucks, and teh local dealers couldnt TOUCH that price.

and i am friends ith a local parts manager that gets me everything at "cost" (wholesale) and it wasnt close.

try www.paceparts.com

they are the BEST when it comes to GM Performance Parts.

The prices on the www.paceparts.com site seem the same as in Jeg's (for the GM crate engines at least.)
