few questions on motors
just a few questions about motors, cause i'm about to change out the motor in my 82 T/A. what people talk about a "SBC" motor, what abouts to they mean by this.. and another thing is, i'm not sure what a Cleveland motor is, i see quite a few around that are 351's, would this work well for my car? or there are a few olds 455 rocket motors that i see around for like 1500 rebuilt.. if anyone can give me some insite on some of these questions that would be great
thanks

SBC stands for small block chevy. I'm not sure what a Clevekand motor is either, but I'm not aware of any chevy 351s. It's probably a ford motor. As for the 455, it depends on what you ultimately want to do with your car. Unless you make real good power with it, it's probably not worth it because you'll have to upgrade nearly everything and will most likely end up spending a fortune. 1500 can be a good deal though, depending on who rebuilt it. If it's one of those mass rebuilders, I'd definitely stay away from it. Just my .02.

Its a ford engine.
Detomaso pantera used it in its cars.
These engines could handle a lot of torque.

a 351 Cleveland is a FORD engine. There is also a 351 Windsor. I want to get one because the engine in my 79' Ford LTD is about to go. It's defenitly a good engine but honestly, I don't know why someone would want to put a ford engine in a GM car. Personally.
thanks for the advice guys, one more thing if anyone can help me out, if anyone knows a general horsepower guild that i was recieve from the following rebullt engines that would be great:
a 350
a 383
a 455 olds rocket
thanks alot

Well, it depends how each engine has been built. Example, are the engines all stock? If the 383 in your above post is a SBC the it is a 350 stroker engine that has been bored .30 over. Personally, unless you have a lot of money (and from what it sounds like, you don't know a lot about engines etc) I would stick with a SBC. Like a 350 or the 383 (assuming the 383 is a SBC). It'll bolt right in, kind of. But again, as horse power goes for those engines. . .It depends if they have been rebuilt to stock or have a lot of after market performance parts. See what I mean? Hope this helps. Now, all you have to worry about is the tranny

Ok, I'm back: Just GENERAL:
350 - - Good power
383- - -More power
455--- - -Probably most but you'll have a heck of a hard time putting this in. IT CAN BE DONE THOUGH. But if this is your first time I WOULD NOT recommend it.

You can get a GM goodwrench motor
for about $1200 it makes about 250hp
that would be a good start for you.
We'd all like to have a 900hp motor.
But try to keep in your budget.Take your
time.Read up on everything you can find.
Make a plan then stick to it.Good Luck

in reference to that 350 engine from gm that makes 250HP, well they site it has like 280.. but anyways what do you predict my quarter mile would be, or 0-60? it would be in a 82 T/A, so it's a fairly light car, it's a 4 speed stick, with 2.73's out back..
thanks

With those 2.73 gears your going to go
low 14's to hi 13's.With the right gears you could go mid to hi 13's.It's been a while since I looked at any crate motors. But with 280hp thats even better.

man if i were be able to hit in the 13's that would be so rad, i'm actually looking at just saving some money for a bit, and in the spring put in the 330HP engine gm offers, that would hit in the low 13's, runnin with the big boys in there new LS1's. and i just found out that the 4 speed sticks that i got in mine are actually quite strong, compare to the 5 speeds.. but it sucks though because on the highway your reving at like 3 and a half easily, and the gas millage is ****, ohhhh well
