I want to be in the low 11's with a sb

Ok here's the deal I want your opinions on what I should do. I have a 86 Trans AM with no motor or tranny. I am on a budget of about $7000. I want to hit low 11's maybe high 10's by next summer. This should be possible on a supercharged small block right? Keep in mind this car is a 2nd car only to be driven on the weekends and maybe on a nice day here or there. With my budget of 7g's and I will be doin all the work myself. I just got a job today interning at a machine shop so that opens up my possiblites even more. So what should I put in the small block to hit my goal. Lemme ask you guys this if you were to build an 11 sec third gen how would you?

92 honda civic
w/95 gsr a hell of a lot of bolt ons and a 75hp shot
86 Trans Am (in progress) w/383 stroker

You'll need around 650 700 hp.

If you want to use a small block, I have to agree with the previous post. I say 400, forged everything, a serious cam, aluminum heads w/ a lot of compression, solid lifters, a big carb/intake, and lots of nitrous . I dont think 7g's is enough cash to go with a turbo setup, a blower could be an option, but nitrous is just cheaper. Keep in mind that for every dollar you spend on making power (engine), you should spend one getting the power to the ground. I'd say you can build a serious 10 bolt w/ 4.xx gears (or get a 12 bolt), build a 700r4 to **** or get a t400 or t350, get some serious tires, some junkyard front shocks and you should be ready to hook it up. I would look around at people here that run low 11's and see how they are set up. Its okay to "copy" a setup that has worked well on other thirdgens.

its really not all that hard to do, just get a 350, get a steel crank (250$) H-beam rods (500$) some good forged pistons ($400) machine work figure around 6-700$, headers (150$) exhaust (300$) built TCI 700R4 (1,200$) auburn posi and strange axles (700$) 10" converter (400$) intake and carb (400$) nice solid lifter cam and roller rockers (300$) and a NOS cheater system (150-250 HP shot) thats about 475$ so the cost here is a hair over 5K factor in some frame ties, good tires and other misc. things at will put you in the 6K range and ever a little gas money in your pocket and some $$ to get the bottle filled a few times

If it would hook, 650-700hp would put him in the high 9's. 500-600 is needed for 10-11's.

If you're going to be pushing 500-600 hp you'll need a bit of suspension work. Stock suspension won't let you hook up that much power to the ground. Add in that extra cost too.

yeah Ill second stephen, I have an eleven second car...I just cant get it to hook hard enough. A decent 350 on NOS or ATI/vortech hooked to a serious suspension will put you deep into the elevens

Think of the car as a whole and not just the engine. You should count on doubling your budget.

remember also that it takes less hp to push a lighter car into the 11's. remove everything and anything you dont need/use. like heavy stereo equipment, could convert power windows to manual remove ac system if its feasible where your located. loose the spare and jack(lose your ability to repair a flat though) im sure people can come up with other stuff to take out....just a suggestion

Well guys, I must renig on my previous post of 650-700 for 9's, and 500-600 for 10-11's. There are a lot of variables that need to be taken into account before I say something like that. I should have said I have seen 11's done with 550hp. But I also just read an article of a guy in a Regal with a TT 355 on 19psi boost, making a little over 950hp, and he is running 9.04et/154mph. zerogauge made a good point, the lighter the car is, the easier it will be to propel into the 11's.

Thats why I suggested 650 to 700 hp 'cause he can do that on a close to stock chassis
and hit his goal.

Heavy cars are also harder on parts. My car race ready with me in it is still over 3200 pounds. If I could get it down to 2800 I should be very low 11's if not 10's.

Poeple hit elevens with 400rhp. Suspension is a major player in this. Get some Dr's, a big stall, lca's, drag shocks and you'll suprise yourself with how fast a base TPI350 can run. If you can lay down 400rhp with this set up, you can easily attain 11's.

People have run 10's in 450hp LS1's and 11's with 400hp LS1's... don't need no 600hp.
